I had my first cold idle surge today funny ive had this tune a while and now i finally got the surge. I let the truck idle for 2mins then took it for a 1mile drive and parked in a gas station and my revs went up and down 3-4times in sequence then finally found a rev range it liked and stopped surging. (This was was parked not in D)

My R&D truck has a pretty nasty noise from the high pressure fuel pump. Same exact noise as my lexus which just got posted for recall....

Edit: Don't hate, at least I waited until he posted.

Damn. Does that mean that the new tune is getting delayed?

sure when I have a chance

no. and I don't want to scare anyone either. It's not a "critical error" it is something related to the relief, Lexus fixed it with a software update on several cars. However I can't confirm there is any issue yet. Just sounds the same. Even the Lexus recall is not "critical" either.

anyways I have a couple of last datalogs to get and work on a touch more smoothing for gear changes

@OVTune you do a lot of Mazda stuff right? I drive quite a few brand new Mazdas from the dealership to my shop and back for remote start installs, and it is unreal how smooth those drivetrains are. Sometimes I'll do the manual shifting on an auto trans car just to feel the smoothness, and it makes me wish my Tacoma was half as smooth. Mazda really has the engine/trans figured out in their new vehicles. Earlier today I was playing with the shifter in one, you can cruise along and put it into manual shift mode, and when you shift gears, its so smooth you can't even feel it. Unreal. I wish that drivetrain was in my Tacoma.

I will agree with you that there will be some variable between vehicles .but I don't think it's any were near what people are reporting.
Some drivers are just more intune with there vehicles and others are not.( different expectations and demands from a given vehicle)
It took me 3 to 5 days to figure out what it took you 1 to 2 days on OV's first test tune 00001 almost bang on.
There were even problems that I never saw till after you pointed them out.
One of the pros of being picky ah

    Good work man!!

Sounds like there will be some differences between the test tune I’m running and tune you’re about to release.

More driving today around town and on the freeway. Truck hasn’t overreved and hasn’t fallen on it’s face. No surging, and no bouncing rpm’s like I have cams. So far things are looking good. I’m thinking if your smoothing out shifting then I don’t have much more to say.

Cold starts are greatly improved also for everyone wondering.

I can tell you for certain, if your truck stuttered like mine did on 1.03B/C.. well it would only be a few seconds before you had a WTF moment lol :)

Thankfully Mat sorted that out nicely with a couple of test tune/log cycles.

Just describing a problem didn't cut it, the log data (from multiple trucks) made all the difference.. especially since Mat doesn't have a M/T R&D truck.

Is it a high pitch noise. Not the injector cleaners, but a whiny oscillating pattern...almost like a belt pulley that needs lube?

Yup. If the auto guys can get together and log what they're experiencing, if Mat can confirm it would help him out, perhaps that will result in the most effective progress

They can do what we did: people with issues datalogged and described what was happening at what specific times during their drive, corresponding to appropriate parts of their log, and then there was a "control" of sorts, provided by someone not experiencing issues, so that Mat had a frame of reference. For the record, it sounds like he would be the "control" for the auto guys, since he hasn't had the reported issues

I couldn't agree with you more!!!

We traded in a 2013 Mazda CX-9 for this Tacoma so that we could haul more stuff with the kids still in the vehicle with us (along with my previous experiense with my 2nd gen). I couldn't believe the night & day difference between the 2 vehicles in how they behaved. Both vehicles are nearly the same size and weight, but Mazda felt so nimble, light and sporty compared to the strong but slow Tacoma that felt like it wanted to randomly fight me sometimes.

I initially thought that the Toyota deliberately tuned it this way because they were focused more with the off-road abilities which was completely different from Mazda's focus of on-road "zoom zoom" abilities. After reading much of this thread, I now know stupidity seems to have run amuck within the Auto-transmission development branch within Toyota. o_O

So again, thanks Matt for giving us back an important element of the driving experience...a level of control and FUN!

I think my issue stems around my speedo not being calibrated for the bigger tires, under light throttle anywhere from 25 and up it will hold gears even at 2700rpm unless I give it gas or let off the throttle.

Quick question for all and @OVTune

can I do the 87 new tune update (the one you are dropping today/this week) with 92 in my tank? The higher octane won't affect the idle learning will it?

It shouldn't at all, higher octane is used for cars with more timing so the regular 87 octane won't make a knock in the engine

You're fine doing it that way. It's 87 on the 91 tune that you have to avoid
