I got rid of my MBRP because the drone was too bad. It sounded great on startup, but overall it is too aggressive. On their website the side exits all contain an aggressive warning, the double exhaust does not.

I bought a borla and had an exhaust shop weld in the muffler and a tip for $140 (muffler was 100 separate). Sounds immensely better with no drone, very similar to the TRD exhaust I had on my gen 2. Borla did make the exhaust so it makes sense.

I wouldn't put an exhaust on a V6... Especially one with Atkinson cycle..

    Drone...

Not to mention MBRP is a terrible brand of exhaust...

Over priced and made in China...

Packaged in my hometown, and shipped out..

    Exhausts add nothing but noise.

Usually not all that pleasant on these v6 and I4 configurations.

The TRD setups are the closest to being 'ok' IMHO. I guess the NVH team put some work into that.

But, every ear has it's own range of pleasant sounding things.

Aftermarket exhaust systems on automatic vehicles are very unpleasant for the rest of us to listen to. Especially on a vehicle that is trying desperately to save gas.

Unless of course you are pairing a properly tuned exhaust with an ECM tune. Mat from OVtune has stated (paraphrasing) that the truck can't "breathe out" well enough on the stock exhaust to get all the power that's there.
I will agree though, that a catback alone probably wouldn't help that much in the power dept. Losing the rear cats may though..

Sometimes I think these forums are full of my seventy year old parents. Everyone complains about loud exhausts. Jeez. The stock exhaust sounds like a Camry, which is probably not that far off. It sucks. Why not buy a prius if you want something you can't even hear?

I got rid of my MBRP because the drone was too bad. It sounded great on startup, but overall it is too aggressive.

I have a MBRP exhaust on my 17 TRD OR. It sounds awesome. Yes, it DID have a LOT of drone by itself, on the freeway. I originally bought the catback SST409 side exit system with the 3 inch pipe tip (btw, the tips are made in China, the rest of the system is made in Canada). Construction quality looks great. I was warned about the drone on some forum before even installing, so I called MBRP and they shipped me a quieter, more "earthy" toned muffler for a hundred bucks. This is what I installed, and it still had a lot of drone on the highway. Sounded like a race car on regular roads, and like a V8 when it started up, but boy that freeway drone! Ended up installing the largest magnaflow resonator that would fit (I think it was a 12inch) at a shop, and that took care of it. I love how it sounds! Bear in mind that on a V6, quieting it down too much just with the muffler is going to get rid of any rumble you might have or want. Better to get a louder muffler and use a resonator to get rid of annoying drone, but preserve the rumble. From what I can tell in online comparisons, the Borla will sound like a cat in heat compared to the rumble from the MBRP. Just budget for a resonator too if you go MBRP, the drone is unbearable otherwise! I did the cabin insulation mod before installing a resonator, and it still wasn't enough!

Saying that you find aftermarket exhausts annoying is answering his question?

I don’t think anyone is getting a Tacoma and planning on having a gas sipper lol. Look at our mpg averages.

I think the TRD exhaust sounds fine.

I appreciate all the responses guys. I will definitely do some more homework on the topic before making my final decision.

Can anyone recommend an exhaust for the 2.7L? I want the TRD exhaust, but no one can confirm if it will fit.

My TRD exhaust sounds good, and it sounded even better when I swapped it to the TRD CAI.

Just get a hammer and a 16 penny nail and poke holes in the muffler. It will still run like shit but sound real cool. Same as all aftermarket exhaust systems on these trucks.
