So I didn't read all 757 pages and I'm not experienced with reflashing eproms...

My question is... do I have to download the existing eprom data before reflashing - so that I can always upload the original tune.

I'm expecting to bring it in for the 50,000 mile service and want to bring it in with the stock program in order to avoid any hassle from the dealer.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure you just download the stock tune file and reflash to that (when you click the 3 dots button, select stock tune file for both ECU and, TCU - if you have AT tranny)

Here is one you guys will enjoy.
    & @OVTune

This is my truck start-up running 87 AT tune with 92Oct.
I had JUST started it before but F'd my recording.
Thinking I need the tune update?

Notice the idle revs on its own.
Notice the hi-pitch cricket sound in the background? It sounds like a pulley. WTF? Injectors???
    What do you guys think?

I don't have the idle issue you mentioned, however, my truck makes the same noise at idle quite frequently. I thought it might be a pully or a belt at first but have all but ruled that out. It may indeed be the HPFP.

    Thanks @SC4333

I enjoy driving it very much. Just wanted to make sure these damn crickets in the engine are an OK thing.

You did listen to the file I attached right?

I'm pretty convinced the Tacoma intentionally shifts the way it does. Toyota was one of the first car makers that introduced the torque managed shift. When the engine retards ignition (reduces torque) during the gear shift to smooth the shift. Pretty much any car does it now - cruise along in top gear at 1800 rpms, drop down to 3rd or 4th and you take off the only indication of a gear shift happening is the tach jumping to 4000+rpm. To anybody who just read that and said to themselves, "but you bought a truck", is the exact reason why Toyota didn't bother doing it.

For the record, it absolutely does. Due to programming. Lol

    You're being seriously paranoid.

92 with the 87 tune does nothing harmful in any way.
The engine is noisy at idle, especially when cold, it's the engine's characteristics, all of ours does it.

Mat said to flash the tune, turn the engine on and leave it doing nothing for 10-15mins, do that, it'll fix the idle. It's learning the idle.

Yes, very odd indeed. The cricket sound seems to be normal as I recall hearing it before (not sure what it is exactly but I will pay even more attention next time I start mine up)

The idle surging is odd but if all reports are accurate, this should be fixed in the new tune.

I ran a tank of 91 octane on the stock tune and a tank of 91 on the 87oct 1.03C map. There's nothing wrong with running higher octane with a map meant for lower. Otherwise there would be zero business for octane boosters (nevermind how ineffective they usually are).

The danger arises from running lower octane fuels than what your tune calls for

I did NOT just refresh, I have had this tune on for 300 miles.
Engine was warm, not cold. Just got home to record it. The crickets is there when I stop during driving.

D-4S system cleaning your injectors, its normal. No there truly isn't a solution.
The ticking is caused by the high pressure fuel pump releasing high pressure gas in short intervals to make carbon deposits come off the injectors. FYI, these Tacomas have 12 injectors total. 6 for the direct injection and 6 for the port injection.
