Yeah I'm leaning the same way too, using the Toyota rear diff has no advantages at all, if anything it's
and you will end up with no warranty at all on the diff since you're not connecting it to a stock electrical system.

You Sir just saved me quite some time, Exactly what I was looking for with the 4Lo signal. Thanks!

I think you are on the right track.
For some pics of accessing the 4wd ECU, read pdf in first post https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lock-stock-and-2wheel-low-3rd-gen-diy-mod.536677/

Note, I haven't checked those pinouts myself yet, but haven't encountered an error yet on the schematics when looking at the front ADD or rear locker wiring. (Good sign the repair manual appears to match too).

Good luck, and if you are feeling frisky please please please document what you learn... I know I appreciate it.

If you don’t want to wire into the trucks harness you could hide a master on off switch under the dash or in the glove box and use it to power up your new switches so u can still use lockers in high range.

Good luck and post up your end results!

    Good idea
I was thinking a delay relay module, such that you have to hold the button for 10 secs or so to energize the output. Figured that would make accidental activation much less likely...

I ran ARB front and rear lockers with 4.88s in my sport and they work wonderfully. Just built my own bussman rtmr and wired everything through that, IMO I wouldn't mess with stock electrical wiring.

Yeah I'll be adding a fuseblock system under the hood for all the power, not sure why I have the heebee jeebee's for air lockers vs E-lockers,
if I don't use the 4Lo signal as a safety or light the dash light I won't be touching the stock wiring.

With Air lockers how do you know if they are properly engaged?

Has your dealer given you any grief over installing them?

I won't ask if you like them because with those tires and those sliders and the gears I'm sure you LOVE them. :)

For the question about the dealer
When my 4wd woudn't engage they told me I would have to pay to diagnose it.... it ended up being a problem with the front ADD and it was fixed free of charge because it wasn't related to my locker install.

As far as knowing they are engaged, you can hear a feint click when it's engaged along with the air compressor building pressure for less than a second, and you can feel the grab of the tires, also the switch lights up a secondary led. If the air compressor continues to turn on often or stay on then there is an issue. Mine shuts off right away and doesn't come back on at all, which means there is no leaks.

A pro about external wiring I can lock up in 2wd for some fishtailing fun, 4wd high or 4wd low. No electronics stop it from engaging at any time like the stock e-locker.

Also so I wouldn't accidently engage my lockers I wired them up like ARB recommended.
For rear locker the compressor has to be on.
For front locker the rear locker has to be engaged.

So I know this thread is a couple years old, but just curious if there’s been any more news on adding a rear locker to the sport models? ARB air locker the only way?

I think there are some other options than the ARB, but i am no expert there...
another option is to use the Elocker from a wrecked OR/Pro.

I just want to say that I have been out on some more difficult stuff lately. More than what I feel I should be pushing a stock Taco (just ATs, sway bar delete, and TRD skid). My friend with an old Bronco that has a detroit locker in the rear and an LSD up front has been impressed seeing what I'm getting through, esp with wheels off the ground.

Sure, I would like to swap in a salvaged OR locker, but I am not in a rush.

How much money we talking about if we could find a salvaged or junkyard OR?

To wire it up the factory elocker in your SR/SR5/Sport/Limited?
Depends on how nice of a switch you get, etc.... but $50-$100 would be max typical (plus the cost of the salvaged rear end)... which I have no idea how expensive that is...

The way it is done in the linked thread, it is a piece of scrap metal for a heatsink, 2 resistors (about ~$10), a diode (~$2 or so), and wires, connectors, switch, fuse...

car-part.com has many, but the prices are higher than I was expecting:
    https://www.car-part.com/

Not sure what the housing would be worth once the locker is swapped out.

    $800 for this ain't teabag:

I assumed a salvaged rear end would be next to nothing. Well you know what I mean Lol

I could see it both ways. The 8.75in axles would be great in a crawler build. And even the 4.30 gears in an open diff have value.

Still, just getting a 3rd member and swapping the gear if need be would be ideal.
