That might actually be one on my fundamental problems, since with underwater work, it's all about getting as close as possible. It's just a different way of thinking.

    Thanks!

I thought here in IL all the snow was gone - so gave it a nice bath and cleaned it all up only to get another 5" of snow and of course the city threw salt everywhere. It's sad my iPhone X takes better pictures than my DSLR....

That all depends on how you use your DSLR. :boink: :D

Sounds like you need to learn how to use your DSLR.

If you consider "better" having a blurry background.. I would also think that, till you notice that the "smart" software behind the portrait mode doesnt know where your trucks roof starts and ends... o_O

Sometimes I can get a really nice looking photo, until you look close at the detail. Its really subject and background dependent. Portrait mode is a gimmick and nothing more.. Having said that 90% of general public wouldnt notice or care cause they arent a photo nazi like me. I like to take time and really get something nice, where most would rather get a snap and move on with their day.

Portrait has one advantage in that your depth of field isnt nearly as small as you would need it to get that blurry of a background.. This was shot at 200mm at f2.8 so the depth of field is so small that her nose is out of focus and her eyes are in focus.

I did the same thing intentionally for dramatic effect. And I went with the nose instead of the eyes because the nose draws you in then you see the eyes staring at you from behind, I kinda liked that. This is a wolf in Montana.
