Agreed, I'll have to wait awhile because I'm not driving 100 miles round-trip to return the tool.

Shit happens, we're just human. I'm sure everyone posting negative comments towards the tech has never made a mistake.

I use one of these guys: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-Universal-3-Jaw-Oil-Filter-Wrench-HU3JFW/204762449

It doesn't take quite as much effort to remove the filter since it grabs from three points and squeezes harder the harder I turn the wrench. Not sure I'd want one that could potentially rupture the filter when putting some torque on it.

I agree, give the dealership a call to let the know where and how you found it and that you'll return it... eventually. The tech is going to be shamed for losing his tool and potentially damaging a vehicle.

Are there really people that think he should drive back and return it (he said 100 miles)? That shit would either go in the garbage or the toolbox if it were me lol

I used to use that one. It works very well, but not perfect. The cool thing is you can poke it way back in a hole with a 2' extension. That's sometimes impossible with the pliers. The problem it has is that if you have limited range of motion with the rachet and have to back up and go again, the 3 jaws tend to open up and you have to reach way back in there and hold the jaws against the filter til you start turning. The cup type are nice, but you have to have a bunch of them and then figure out which one fits. Now I use the lisle tool and I really like it. One size fits all, and it has springs to keep it tight against the filter. You can put it directly on a rachet or on a 2' extension.

i was taking a piss on a plane at 30k feet
looked down and found a 1/4 extension branded snap-on against the corner edge of the toilet and the wall juts sitting there
picked it up and thought well geez I hope he didn't forget anything else....
washed it off and kept it.

I wonder if they take inventory of their tools just as they do with replacement parts...

"Hello, flight tower? A 12" Crescent wrench just fell out of the sky and dented the hood of my car. I'd like to return it to the mechanic that worked on that plane. ...along with a bill for fixing my car." LOL

At work we have a lost and found spot in the maintenance shop. The maintenance crew is pretty honest, and most people on shop floor are honest. (MOST)

The machanic who did the oil should of been more carefull, but stuff does happen.

If it was something significant I could see the point, and would send it back too. But it's a $7 oil filter wrench. I am not following the logic here, it would cost more to send in the mail, or drive it, than the tool itself..

I called the dealership, and they forwarded me to the Service department Director. He didn't answer, so I left a detailed voicemail.
We'll see if he even calls me back.

When I was in school for automotive we were allowed to work on our own cars sometimes. watched a kid try to pull out of a lift, car was a stick and he had a really jerky start. Wrench he left on top of the radiator fell back into the serpentine belt, broke a pulley, knocked the belt off, and dented his hood...

Since then I spend about 10 minutes looking for tools in my engine bay every time I do something in there. I just wish I could find all the 10mm sockets I've left inside my car interiors.
