Well, shit. Credit card info was stolen/cloned and used twice and some gas station in Brookshire.

It’s cancelled and won’t be out money, but now I have to change all my info. Lame.

 

That sucks, is very annoying when ever that happens.

 

mine was stolen a few months back, bank notified me as two charges of $600 and $450 were used at some store in New York

 

Has happened a couple of times to me too. Citi took a month to reverse the charges.

 

Always a good thing to have alerts turned on credit cards.

I have alerts set up to where anytime a transaction happens, I get a text message to phone instantly with what the charge was the price.

Not completely fool proof as some cards might now have alerts like that, but most major ones do.

 

Sorry to hear that! At least you caught it before it got any more serious.

 

security guy next to me said there was a 41GB dump from a breach that was just made available on torrent. Hes unwrapping it now and we are going to see if any of our info is in it.

One thing I recommend doing, get a second checking account, xfer money to your every day account that you use with your debit card based on what you need. If the card is compromised, the max that can be spent is what you xferred to it.

 

Also - my tactic that I dont particularly recommend, i spend all my money well before someone else can.

That is a pretty good tactic.

I also practice that, but I usually don't use my debit card for every purchases and I use a credit card with rewards that I pay off every month and keep track of purchases just like a debit card.

Those are usually better at getting your money back quickly if you have an issue... that and having alerts setup for every purchase makes sure I know what happens with it.

 

Nah not a breach from our company. Hes on our security ops team and he investigates phishing and other cyberthreats.

His team was the one that cracked the big one last year at blackhat, that big ransomware one

 

I’m curious to see if I’m on that list, given when my problem started.

Could he check for my name?

Nah, a compiled list of various breaches over an unspecified time frame, plain text passwords and email addresses
