    I've seen some good solutions using access hatches.

    It’s a pretty cool idea, just seems like a lot of time and money for such little space imo.

    I found my UWS toolbox for $75, it’s the compact box so it doesn’t take up much space and doesn’t sit low in the bed so I’m able to store stuff under it aswell.

    It’s not a lot of space but I’m thinking it might be worth for my straps and some recovery gear. Better then leaving it in the cab. I also have a tool box but it’s such a pain to pull things out just to get to the straps. Hopefully this will solve my problem.

    To each their own, I just couldn’t justify spending $150-200 to store straps. A neatly organized toolbox seems like a much better idea haha.

    A toolbox is a no-go for several reasons:
    • I don't need that much space to store things in my truck;
    • I have a cap and probably always will, which obviously makes accessing a toolbox a problem;
    • Not enough room for me, and sometimes a dog or three, to sleep in the bed when I camp;
    • Not enough room to pack my camping gear;
    • Would turn a 5' bed into 4' bed, or shorter.

    I get you, I used to have a camper myself and regret selling it now. I had no need for straps when I had it on. Tow straps or anything else is just keep in a small mechanics bag. I just think that’s spending more then an $50-75 is a bit much for a small space like that.

    I’m interested to see how it looks though when you’re finished! I myself though couldn’t justify doing it. Like I said to each their own. Good luck with it

    The root of my issue is with the double cab design. There is very little storage. The space behind the back seat doesn't accommodate much. The tailgate storage is an attempt to squeeze the most storage out of the available space.

    Thought about doing something like this, but maybe not as high.

    Would suck sliding cargo in and out of the bed if the tailgate isn't flush with the bed

    Local to you.

    Interested in the design as I am thinking that straps/recovery gear could be in here and out of the way but easy access when needed.
    Storing inside the DCSB with limited space already as a 1st gen, not an ideal sitch.

    This storage area would need to be weatherproof but not foul up the tailgate controls...

    Depends on the cargo. I rarely have anything in there I can't lift an inch or two.

    I love the tailgate storage idea. Hoping someone comes up with a finished product to share!

    On the topic of bed storage, has anyone had any experiences with something like this?

    [IMG]

    They can be had on Amazon anywhere from $150-$200 depending if you want aluminum or plastic. I like this style since I haul motorcycles quite often and it doesn't compromise the length of the bed at all.

    I think by the time you buy the marine style deck-lids and various parts for the tailgate mod, you'll end up spending something close to the price of one of these, while this offers more storage, weather proof, locking, and mostly out of the way. Not to mention time saved with a bolt-in solution.

    Thoughts?

    In my opinion, this is much easier and gives you much more storage space. It's just a little pricey at times.

    and a pick :)

    its a good option but for a double cab with a small bed it takes up to much room. But that might just be my opinion.

    X2 on this, this wouldn’t affect you much while sleeping in the back either.
