If one side is shifting and the other is not I would have a professional check it out. Up here we would blame it on frost heave. You had a extra cold winter this year?

 

Hate when that happens.

 

ALL concrete cracks. Its the nature of the material, hence the "grooves" or control joints as we call them. Thats why they are there, so you can control the cracking to where you want it to happen. If you have major cracking thats a different matter. Would need to see pics though.

 

That makes me feel ill just thinking about it..

 

anybody suggest planting some fast growing trees to try to firm up the ground a bit? let some poplar take over, maybe a few conifers for some deeper root growth...?

I've been rebuilding in a town that was recently leveled due to a wildfire, and if they don't get straight to replacing the hillside forests, the entire city is going to slowly melt into the river as the root systems decay... Downtown is along the river, but its several residential neighbourhoods are built atop the valley banks overlooking the river, I give it a short decade before significant erosion causes serious issues.. There has been some replanting efforts, but none of it where it is needed..

 

Can't believe the common practices of developers and builders alike, it would be nice to give people the credit of ignorance, but it's hard to believe that being in the industry they can't see these issues becoming serious down the road.. Then selling the properties at full price.. I'm sure it's not always so sinister, but....
All I know is I'm building my first home solidly on the canadian shield.. It will involve more work cribbing foundations, and water/wells/sewage will be a trick, but the nightmares involved with soft/shifting ground are not something I want to have my money tied up in..

 

Not a project or anything, but I was just down at my neighbors house (Farmhouse built in 1776) and I was admiring and snapped a few photos of the original hardwood floors and the various patterns in the rooms. These patterns run along the entire perimeter of each room as well as along some of the large openings between rooms. Serious craftsmanship!!

 

That took some time! Amazing work especially for a floor...

 

It was finally nice enough (sunny & 50's here) where I could get my table & miter saw set up how I like. Finally wrapped up my LR remodel/refresh by trimming out the window and getting the new curtain rod & curtains hung. Had to use 2 different Minwax stains to match the existing window finish/color....it's pretty close.

I have a new couch & chair on order and still need to paint my fireplace doors once it warms up more.

It's all the more rewarding to see it all come together given how hard the wallpaper was to remove...never thought I'd live to tell the tale.

Anyway... I’m about to have a meltdown...

We just closed on a newly constructed house and moved in this weekend. Washer and dryer just got here. I’m trying to do all the hookups and then I see a major malfunction... the dryer exhaust pipe that comes from the wall... it’s installed backwards! (Stock photo to show what I have going on).

Can anyone give me any guidance on an easy fix? If I call the builder right now, I may need bail money shortly after that, I’m ready to come unglued on his ass.

 

Other than taking the whole thing off and putting it on right, maybe cut the crimped end off?

I don’t know dryer vent pipe at all. Is it possible the entire run is backwards?

 

how far is the run to get out of the house? if it's just up and out behind a sheet or two of drywall I'd be pretty tempted to pull it and flip it.. I'm pretty shy about cutting corners with anything that could lead to a fire hazard.. peace of mind has a pretty high price tag, and depending how much you have to cut into to access it, I'd be pretty tempted to just go at it without the builder.. having said that, if they don't get called on shoddy work theres nothing stopping them from building 1000 houses with potential fire hazards built into them.. .02

 

I'd bet the whole thing is backwards. Make the builder fix it. Does it run straight up through the roof? Might be able to flip it without ruining the wall, but I'd demand they fix it. Don't let them just cut the bottom crimps off, as the main problem would be lint clogging at the joints in the wall that are also upside down...

 

Well we decided to go for it and do the concrete countertops. Talked to some countertop guys and looked around a bit and just didn't like the prices. Just have to double check the math on materials needed before we order.

I will say one of the annoying things with Z countertops is buying the forms. You cant order individual forms but rather have to buy their "packages". My math shows I need like 1 8' section more than a "half package" so Im stuck ordering a full kit. be nice if they sold add on pieces for situations like that.

 

Anybody have a cheap/easy solution to kitchen cabinet door replacement?

Mine have so many layers of paint, and are honestly just ugly I'd like to do something to give the kitchen a facelift.
