If I could do it over again, I could probably do it in 4-5 hours. For me it was a pain because my high pressure line was so rusted it just mangled itself. Replaced it for $90 from Napa.

 

Yikes, def not a job I feel comfortable doing alone lol. especially driving 400 miles a week

 

It wasn’t that terribly bad. Just two bolts to hold the rack in place, the two outer tie rods, and the two hoses. Then you just wrestle it out and wrestle the new one in. It was nice having a second vehicle to drive for trips to the store and such. Takes a lot of the stress off.

 

It was a total shit show.

Lessons:
-Get fucking air tools
-Get inside out of the wind, and turn on a heater when it's 15Deg F
-Do not plan to re-use inner or outer tie rods
-Pull the bolts completely out of the steering shaft before trying to slide the slip connector.
-Have spare bolts to mount the rack to the frame, or a 1/2" drill and some grade 8 bolts.
-Cut the old bolts off if you can't get them out in 5 minutes.

You MUST have two people for this job, and clear an entire day.

If I have to replace mine again iI'l drop the money on a SOLO Tundra rack.

 

Damn man that's big boy style...I assume on dirties its only a matter of time before my rack dies.

 

Jesus, that sounds way worse than my experience. All of my stuff came out relatively easily. The drivers side bolt was upside down because they replaced my frame and were lazy, but that worked to my benefit.

the sound of the tires around corners is intoxicating. it's truly one of my favorite things to do, when you smoke a corner like that. I love it haha

Rack life depends how hard you beat it, also I am convinced that solid mount lowers don't help. Although having my alignment stay set is worth it.

Yeah, getting that bolt in "backwards" is a big help. I'd also be a lot less pissy about the experience if it hadn't been so fucking cold.

 

True, with the strain of dirties and added weight, it’s lijely just a matter of time. I hope to put in that steering rack sometime within he next 100k, but who knows. LT guys out west seem to go through their racks quite constantly. Might as well do it once when that happens.

To buy or not to buy?

@Chux @planters15 @Wheelspinner you guys have basically the same snorkel as I do. Have you had any issues in heavy rain / sleet? For snow just turn it around and be done with it I know lol

 

I know Chux and myself don’t use a rubbah couplah. The clear bowl style pre cleaner we have fits on like the regular skewp.

Also I’ve never had issues with the skewp in rain. The safari snorkel has openings to jet the water out. On knockoffs I’ve taken a grinder and opened up the slots a little to match those on a safari. Driven in some bonkers storms and never had an isssue. Snow I can’t comment because I’m always at work when that’s going on.

There is a 3” and a 3.5” version. The first two choices in that search. I can’t remeber what size works. Maybe @Chux remebers

 

If I member corectly wasn’t there a difference in our prefilters that mine mounts outside the straw and yours mounts inside?

Just took a measurement with 3” as the start for accuracy.

I got 3.5” ID

Dust - yes

Rain - Heavy rain you'll end up collecting some in the bowl, don't forget to remove.

Snow - Will collect in the bowl. An hour half trip on the highway in a snow storm I maxed out the bowl.
