ABS brakes????

Do our trucks have ABS brakes? I was just told by my dad, That if you have ABS brake's you have to power bleed your brakes. I put new SS Brake lines on the front and just hand bled them. Everything is fine. But I was just wondering if I even have ABS? thanks!

And please prove him wrong!

 

I know some 1st gens do but not sure which models. But look in your engine and follow your brake lines. If you do you will see the ABS motor.

 

I looked it up, but it just says some models came with it, and some you had to order it if you wanted it. But was it just the rear that had it?

 

Yours is a TRD so im pritty sure it came with it. I think the base models it was an option and no you dont have to power bleed the brakes.

 

Did the SS brake lines make the pedal feel any harder?

 

A little. Hard to tell since I did the Power Slot Rotors and Hawk pads at the same time. But I do notice a better stopping ability.

If you have ABS on your truck there will be an ABS controller mounted under the hood on the passenger side, on top of the wheel well, in that area between the Cruise Control unit and the windsheild wiper motor. You'll recognize it as it has about 8 metal brake lines going in and out of it. I'd be willing to be that you don't have ABS on your truck. Most 1st gen TRDs delivered to the PNW didn't have it.

Not all TRDs have ABS, mine does not. The region the truck was originally delivered to had something to do with whether truck came with or not. Many of the 02s I've seen in the Pacific NW did not come with.

SS brake line did improve my braking response/feel. Plus, less chance of snagging a line on an errant tree branch out on the trail. Definitely worth the expense.

Nope, I dont have ABS!!! Cool, now I feel better about doing my rear brake line..
I havent done the rear one yet. Kinda been putting it off.

 

Power bleeding your brakes can help prevent damage to the master cylinder seals. Another way to check ABS is there should be an ABS dash panel light that illuminates when you turn your key to "on" if you have ABS.

 

My cousin's 2002 3.4 extended cab SR5 has no ABS brakes on it. Where as my 2003 2.7L Reg Cab, SR5 has ABS brakes!!

 

Federal law required ABS to be standard on all vehicles at least by 2004. I've heard various conflicting reports of when Toyota made it standard, but I believe it was 2003.

My 2000 SR5 does not have ABS.

 

My 01 SR5 has no ABS. Ive heard that the ABS on these trucks r horrible. Take that with a grain of salt but thats what I’ve heard.

 

Am I the only one around here that looks at the dates on threads?

My limited 2001 double cab has them but I hate them. My Abs has tried to kill me multiple times. Hit a pot hole when braking, it goes off and it sucks at stopping the truck. I have rolled through 2 intersections from my abs kicking on and not working properly. I disconnected its electronics and I can stop on a dime now with my upgraded tundra brakes. Wish it was easy to delete all the abs crap in the engine compartment so it just sits there for now

 

ive seen more and more extremely old thread revivals. I think people are getting a little too bored lol
