Key question

I picked up a new 2017 left over TRD 4x4 DCSB, MT a few weeks ago and am loving it compared to my 2009 Outback XT. The dealer handed me two keys and i read somewhere that another owner got three from their dealer. Im wondering how many keys you guys got when you purchased your new Taco? Keep in mind that since its a MT, i need a key to start the ignition and not the AT fobs some have.

my 2017 MT just has two identical keys....I think the 16s need a 3rd key specifically for the tailgate. Ours works with the ignition key

The dealer is supposed to give you three keys with every new vehicle.

Two master keys and two fobbs and one valet key no fob.

But, two is correct if they are the H key (key/remote combo)



EDIT: I should add that I recommend going somewhere and have two cheap duplicates (just the key pattern) made (cost ~$5). One, keep in your house spare key. One keep in your wallet. It won’t start the truck, but it will get you past the door if that’s where your keys are. Also works on tailgate. Dealer/Locksmith can program another key or create a clone key if you need a third for your situation.

 

Mine is an H and I got 3. I wonder if the valet key is only for certain trims?

 

Interesting. That would be my guess. I wonder what the valet key doesn’t do? Usually a valet purpose is to hide features from servicers (won’t open trunk, glovebox, speed limiter, etc).

 

The valet key cannot be used to make more keys with the transponder frequency. Whereas you can duplicate the transponder code from a master key.

 

I got two fobs and a key for my Tail gate so I suppose that’s three total.
