Very minor but I like it. Took my plug and painted Cement 1H5 and then sprayed a little clearcoat over it.

You had the rack made custom? What was that like, where do you have something "made"? I am really regretting the MX4 because the KB Voodoo rack is not compatible.

Also how do you unscrew the rack?

Sorry for all the questions I just really want a roof top tent and the MX4 is making it difficult

I had a custom rack made by my local offroading shop. They make rock crawlers from scratch and race them around the nation. They also sell them overseas, primarily to european customers. So I had them fabricate the rack using the DOM tubing they use for roll cages.

On the picture in the post you have qouted, do you see the little humps (should be four, but on the picture it only shows three of them)? Those are torx bit head screws. There are four on each side that goes into the side of the bed. All I have to do is unscrew those four on each side and lift the whole rack if I want to use the whole bed space. With the rack on, I can open up the first panel so I normally just leave the rack on since most of my stuff are in tote boxes and coolers so I can just grab the handle and drag it out.

I am not sure if you want the whole set up in details or not, is that all you need?

Thanks for the info. I will have to check my local shops. The last question I have is when you unscrew is there a nut on the other side of the bed metal? Or the hole is threaded?

Also can I ask what you paid for it?

There were two options that I was leaning on. I went with a bracket and a welded nut on the bracket on the inside of the bed side to act as a bed reinforcement (which is overkill, but I figured using DOM tubing that has a weight rating of 2 ton; might as well overkill everything). The other option is just using clip-on nut plates. If you pull the bed side cap up, there are large rectangular holes running along the top of the bed side, just use drill a hole on them where the clip-on nut plates will go and you are good to go. Just make sure if you go with any of that options, to have a plate running across the side top (see the picture on the post you qouted) to help distribute the weight evenly. I paid 1k flat for labor, powder coating and materials since everything was from scratch and had to be planned out. I was also very picky on the measurements cause I have rear ditch lights on my roof, so I didn't want my tent to cover it so they had to test fit the tent while making the bed rack, on top of that I told them I want the first fold on the MX4 to open up atleast 2/3s so I can drag stuff out.

It was a very hands on experience since I had to tell them what was on my head cause there was no other product that functions like it and it was nice having professionals chime in and recommend placements and add-ons like the brackets so my bed won't twist when I am go over rocks/ridges. The beds are fine to twist, but I didn't want the bed twisting with a tent on top of it cause I was afraid it might mess the bed up and put a twist on the platform so it was just one of those things that I didn't want to find out in the long run since RTTs are expensive lol.

Thanks so much for the info. Later this year after a move to New Mexico I think I’ll make something similar. I expected between $500-1000 so that sounds great for all the effort they put in to it.

Ya, no problem I was lucky I stumbled onto the shop. Like I said, they mostly focus on rock crawlers and Jeeps, but would take on other vehicles if they are interested.

A lot of high quality bed racks are around that price range so it was a win for me =]. Good luck with yours!
