The sport has 17” wheels. The off-road has 16”.

    265/65/17 on sport
    265/70/16 on off road

Same diameter. Different side wall size to accommodate the different rim diameter.

Alright, serious question here. Learn me up please because apparently I've been learned up wrong. How does a 1" difference in wheel size result in same diameter with the 65 vs 70?

The 65 and 70 is your side wall size. The higher the number the taller your tire :p

Yeah I get that. But how does that correlate to equal diameter with different sized wheels? A difference of 5....what, percent?... seems so miniscule

Does that really make up that large of a difference?

This is easiest way to understand what’s going on. Punch in some sizes and it’ll show you all the dimensions

I definitely beat my head against the wall for a while trying to make sense of it and understand the meaning behind everything. Being able to visualize and compare made it a lot easier for me.

Second number is a ratio, not an actual measurement.

The second number in the tire size is the aspect ratio, and tells you the sidewall height as a percentage of the tread width. So, you multiply that by the tread width to get the sidewall height in mm (on one side of the tire). Multiply that by two and divide that by 25.4mm to get the total sidewall in inches. Add the wheel diameter to get the total diameter.

    265/70 R16 = (265 x .70 x 2)/25.4 + 16 = 30.61"
    265/70 R17 = (265 x .70 x 2)/25.4 + 17 = 31.61"

So as you can see, the only difference here is the 1" difference in wheel diameter.
