255/85/16 is roughly a 33"x10" tire and the 285/75/16 is roughly a 33"x11.5" tire. They will both fit height wise with your lift. The 285's generally require some type of trimming of the mud flaps (front and back) and sometimes a CMC depending on specific wheel/tire combo.

I am installing my lift tomorrow, it will also be a full 3" front and 2.75 rear.

I went with the 255/85/16 so I wouldn't have to chop or trim anything. I think it comes down to personal preference more than anything. Most situations the skinny's are supposed to perform better than 285's. Some people the looks of the 285 matter more to them than functionality.

I'm willing to bet you would clear the height, but run into scrubbing issues. Most seem to have issues in reverse and at full lock. Alignment also seems to be the key, and getting caster to as close to 3 as possible seems to be the consensus. I am not an expert by any means, but have spent a lot of time on here prepping for my build.

I'm super tempted by the BFG 34x10.5x17 KO2 ... damn expensive ... but at around 33.5 tall and 10.5 wide it works out to a 265/80r17 and might not need the same amount of trimming as a 285

i was tempted to try that route as well, but in the end went with the 255/85/16 Dick Cepek Extreme Country. I have always liked the KO2 for my applications though. If you do end up going that route please update us.

Cormudgen- CMC=cab mount chop. I don't know what exactly it entails, but I wasn't willing to attempt it by myself. Most 255's avoid that though.

I haven't chopped yet but will in the future, it definitely depends on the set-up alignment and wheels offset so far I haven't had any rubbing issues:fingerscrossed:

Ripped off all four mudflaps. Scratches all down both sides 6112’s up front on 3rd notch 5100’s in back with Toytech 1” block Skids & sliders from SOS Concepts I got rid of the 1” block and put on Wheelers 1 1/2” progressive AAL. SPC UCA. Be sure your standing on the drivers side when reading the instructions! I swapped sides so many times that I can swap UCA’s in 15 minutes. I put in the 3/4” spacer to eliminate the Taco Lean, and just got my 4th alignment. Traded the OEM rims for 17” Sport rims and a bora bora 1” spacer. I got my Firestone 285/70/17 MT2’s. Pelfreybilt gas tank skid and hi-lift jack should be here Friday. Looking at bumpers, but I think they will wait for next year. So far I’m happy with my build. I’ve done it all myself, leading to a lot of cussing and frustration, but it’s all mine.
Their website says max rim width is 7”.
    Good looking tires though.
The Thornbirds have the complete badass look, but once again have the 7” rim width.
That’s unfortunate since I’m staying with stock rim size.
I would absolutely go with this tire.

If you have 7" wheels, you should be able to run those Thornbirds in 255/85R16 in "C" or "D" loads. The suggested range wheel is from 6.5-8.

Thanks man. I must’ve been rushing through info again to have missed that.
Edit. I can’t find this info. All I can find says rim size min 7”-max 7”.

I also looked on their website and you are correct for the Truxus though. In 255/85/16 the minimum and maximum wheel listed is 7". If I had the correct wheel and didn't just order tires I would definitely consider these. I really like the pattern, and siping living in snow and ice country.

3 inch lift with Toytec Boss and All Pro UCA's up front. AP expedition leafs with Bilstien 5100 shocks in the back. 255/85/16 Cooper S/T Max tires. All Pro skids, rear bumper and sliders, Hidden winch mount with XRC 8000 winch. Dual Optima batteries with IBS combiner/isolator and solar. CMC. Auto sliding rear window mod, hidden CB, CVJ axles and plenty of other little mods.

All I can say is that I've had these tires on stock rims for 2 years. No issues. Also had them on a previous vehicle with 7.5's through the entire life of the tire. No issues.

I have the AXT’s and have been really impressed with them.
For a grand OTD the CXT’s are looking good too.

I got the AXT’s to replace my BFG Rugged Trails. IMO Mastercrafts have well outperformed the BFG’s and are much quieter.
My truck had 39k miles on it when I got it so maybe new the BFG’s might’ve performed better.
It took me 2 days to dump the BFG’s.

I am currently running the Mastercraft MXT, but don't think it is available in 255. I have 245 until later today. The MXT has been great though. I have gotten about 35,000 miles and still have about 3/16 above the wear marks. There is very little cupping and have worn evenly. I check tire pressure every couple weeks and rotate every 5,000 miles.

The BFG Rugged trails are junk brand new. I got stuck in my flat yard with wet grass. 4x4 got it out, but they were absolutely helpless and a joke to be thrown on an off-road package vehicle. I bought certified pre-owned with 20,000 miles. They put the tires on and wouldn't use a different tire. I ran them for a summer and replaced with MXT in fall. I wouldn't hesitate to run a mastercraft again. I just found a better deal this time.

I have run the KO2, and would try the KM2. I think BFG makes some decent tires, but if toyota got rid of the rugged trails for stock OR I bet they would redesign or get rid of completely. There wouldn't be a market from anyone but the commuters.

I've been running the Toyo M55 in 255/85/16 load E for a few years. Great tires. The center tread is on a raised block, so you end up with a bald patch in the center when you still have good tread on the sides - kinda strange for such expensive tires. I spent the winter driving on a set of Dean Backcountry MT tires in 255/85/16 load E. I was super stoked on how they handled this winter (it's been a big one). I'm back on my M55s for the less-snowy months.
