Have just begun learning the ins and outs of Lightroom and photography in general. My camera setup is.... embarrassing...

Question for you pros: I just got an iPhone X. Compared to a real camera, how does it hold up? It’s easier for me to use the phone, but I’d like to start collecting quality photos of my truck.

How good a camera is really only depends on what you're going to do with it. iPhone camera is just fine for taking pictures of your truck around the way for web/small prints (for most people). No need to spend a bazillion bucks on a big ass camera you might not even use very much, unless it's already in the cards for you. If you want something bigger (higher resolution with better contrast/color accuracy) for larger prints or submission to magazines, take that pig to an off-road event in your area and throw a rock. Chances are it hits a photographer or somebody shooting the event for funzies.

If you're hellbent on awesome pics but don't want to spend on a camera, you could also pay for a shoot. Most photogranerds will work with you on pricing for a small shoot. If you're ever in DFW, TX area, give me a holler and I'll get down!

No phone will compare to the abilities of a DSLR and a variety go good glass. Just do it.

BUT you gotta know how to use it properly or you will get frustrated with the results and turn back to your phone..

The iPhone X will take good pictures no doubt. What you’ll be missing is the quality raw data that a more capable camera will capture to enable you to edit the photo later in an editing program. (to really simplify it)

In good lighting conditions your phone will do very well. Start there since you have it and have fun.

A shitty picture with an $8,000 body is still a shitty picture. Learn to beat up what you have and you'll be fine. I've seen pros out-shoot bajillion dollar gear with point and shoot cameras because they know how to make any camera scream. These shots look great! On the first one, just be careful about blocking your subject (the truck) with too much stuff, it takes away from it! On the second one try to use the noise remover thingy in lightroom/Photoshop camera raw a bit to smooth out some of the grain in the darker spots.

Bottom line, keep shooting and keep learning about composition and light/exposure. You're off to a great start.

Great tips, thanks! I'll keep plugging away. I'm using a Samsung NX1000 and recently started shooting in RAW as well as giving editing a try (found out I already had Lightroom...). Certainly fun learning!

Great shots! 1st one is tits.
Question, I have same grille but really don't like how it's so flat from the side. I'd rather it be sunk back for more depth, maybe half way as deep as yours.
    How to?
    Thanks!

Raw is the BEES KNEES! There's so much extra data missing when you shoot in JPG.

If youre ok with just snapping the pic and then thats that, then youre fine with the phone camera.. However if you like to shoot and edit your photos in post, push dynamic range of the sensor, and do long expo style shots, a real camera makes more sense. Dont get me wrong, for a phone its pretty good.. but for someone who actually edits raw files or shoots seriously, I dont think any phone camera would cut it.. It all takes experience and trial and error. Ive taken hundreds and hundreds of photos before I started to get good ones. I have however used the 120fps 1080p on my Iphone 7+ for some videos before when I needed it for some B-roll. So things like that are pretty handy to have as well.
