My 4.0's sweet spot seems to be right around 183-185

My 2.7 runs hotter at 194-199

I run at about 188 - 190 in the winter months here in California. In the summer, truck run about 192 - 194.

Does it really matter as long as you’re not close to the red H? Mine always runs a little bit less than halfway between H and C. If you’re splitting hairs between degrees, you got too much time of your hands

Maybe not for the average joe but when you play footsy with the engine and live in a harsh climate, watching operating temperatures maybe a good thing.

So what is the acceptable temp. range for a 4.0??? I know most modern vehicles run somewhere generally between 190 and 220. I have no idea what temp. my truck runs at. I know probably 99% of us only have the temp. gauge on the dash and as long as it’s not in the red zone we are good to go. I’ve had 5 Toyota trucks in a row and not one has ever overheated. I live in the California Central Valley which gets over 100 often in the summer. Even when towing my boat in 105 degree temps at 70 mph I’ve never had the temp gauge go above half way. So again I ask of those who have an actual gauge that shows specific temp what is the safe or normal range, and what is the max temp before you need to shut it down?

230 is asking for a warped head. 240 is a warped head.

178-182 normal cruising. 190 if I hit a long steep hill and leave the cruise on.

190.2-194.5 , this is according to my Ultragauge in dead of winter and heat of summer With the ultra gauge you can see the thermostat open , the truck will be at 194 for awhile then the thermostat opens and it drops to 190 ish then warms back up to 194

    I voted 192-194 range

So would you say up to 220 we are good and exceeding 220 we may be heading for problems? I’ve never seen the temp range or max published anywhere for the 4.0 so I’m asking out of curiosity.

Update.....blown head gasket. Rad, waterpump and fan clutch were working overtime to keep temp at around 200°.....3rd engine in 14months
1st engine..mysteriously blew gasket and began to misfire..Toyota fixed under 100k warranty. HG blew again but Toyota washed hands...they didn't machine the block the 1st time.
2nd engine. Was a rebuilt with 10k less miles than original...blew a HG, guessing the previous vehicle also has cooling issues. Company I bought from replaced 1 month out of warranty.
3rd engine....we'll see how this one goes.

I have noticed that the stock gauge shows right in the middle for everything between 170 and 215. I don't trust it at all. I'm right at 190 unless i'm pulling a hill.
