I just picked up Dewaults big 1/2 and smaller 3/8 impact. Best investments in truck tools in a while. The big one is almost to strong and have yet to even use it on the 3rd setting. The smaller one is still strong and is rated to undo something at 120 ft lbs. which is probably enough for most applications. The bigger one is probably pretty over kill for the average garage guy.

Both the mid and high-torques I'm looking at are 1/2." If you had to choose, which one? Or is your vote to get the 3/8"?

High torque 1/2 all the way, I have a 3/8 for small stuff but 1/2 sockets and impact are a must for getting shit done on trucks.

yeah get the high torque. THen get a 3/8'' one. Use the 3/8'' one primarily as it'll be easier to fit. The 1/2'' will be for "Fuck you your coming off" or "fuck you your staying on"

Oh yeah I can imagine. The Lincoln I've been using is pretty decent on when I was welding up my Lexus/Tacoma rails together. I didn't spring for a more beefy one because I'm still learning how to weld.

Here's some of the welds I'm proud of, for someone with zero welding experience.

Most the Toyota stuff is so small id think 3/8 is enough. They do make the smaller impact with a 1/2" head (my dad picked one up at the same time as me) with the same rating at 120 ft lbs. The 1/2" has its place (suspension compents, lug nuts, etc) and the 3/8s has its place (smaller axle stuff, and any other misc bolts). I use both and have no regrets but picked up the smaller 3/8 at a show for 100 bucks and couldn't pass it up

Links to both that I have and use

Just from looking at that my biggest tip for you is, SLOW DOWN! and it'll come out much cleaner.

Haha man you should see my other seat rails... looks way worse than that. Still getting used to adjusting the wire speed and everything so I guess I'm over-compensating with speed.

Stopped by the body shop on my way home from classes to see if they had started to work on my truck, unfortunately they haven't even touched it. :(

I agree practice makes perfect but maybe you shouldn't practice on something that may save your life someday... Would hate to see you get in an accident or rollover and the weld brake and seat goes bouncing around. Worse case scenario but very plausible.

Oh these seats aren't going anywhere, I ran a bead on both sides of the rail the entire length.

I think you win the awards for the biggest balls!

Those are shit welds. I say this with complete respect. The only way to get better is to show what you can do and except criticism and advice.

    Like listed above, slow down.

Remember, the sound of the welding should give you a hint of how your welds are being layed down. It should sound like perfectly fried eggs. (With ear plugs).

This is my go-to impact gun. It came with my other drill. I use it at the junkyard, on my truck, just about everything. Not as much torque as the beefier DeWalts but it's relatively cheap and compact.

I love air impacts but I think the electric ones now a days are amazing. There just way more versatile I think. I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks this

I'm amazed at the power my 1/4" hex drive has. My 1/2" air impacts are only used for lug nuts anymore.
