I did a little search and only found one thread but it didn’t really talk about the actual button start part. I would have posted it in the 1st gen thread but I didn’t wanna clog it up like a usually do haha.

Why would I want to do this??

Well, I broke this little rod thing behind my key cylinder, and I can’t seem to find any info on it or a part out to steal it from....
    AA7DA71B-2224-446F-8389-84A6EC72BAF5.jpg

(If you have one let me know)

Currently starting my truck with a screw driver in the ignition switch with the steering wheel lock jammed open. It works but wouldn’t be very impressive if I were to go on any hot dates.

Any info would be pretty neat, thanks.

Have you tried looking for someone parting out a truck? Or a wrecking yard?

Dealer is likely an expensive option, but could get you going again.

No good wrecking yard around me and I can’t seem to find any part outs....

And the closest dealers 2 1/2 hours away....

I posted a video in the first gen thread haha, why don’t you go find me one of the rods in a 3rd gen runner or something, next time you go to a yard anyway

I'm going to the yard this Friday. I'll keep you in mind - plenty of Toyotas out here.

Take a picture of your ignition and I'll see what I can do.

It’s really just the rod thing, pop the cylinder out and I think the rod should just come right out, might need to pull with some pliers or something.

Or what do you mean? Should be just like yours.

I don't have my ignition apart, hard to see what it looks like. Take a pic of where you found the rod and how the assembly looks like in case I have to find it out of a Camry or a Sienna or something.

Have you ever taken the key cylinder out?

The ignitions just 3 pieces, key cylinder > rod > ignition switch, all in a little bracket that comes off the steering console. Pretty sure the rod will be the same in most 90’s Toyota’s like you said, but I don’t know, sorry for being difficult. 7FA16CB7-F6FA-4701-9846-42058F7ADD1B.jpg

This is the best picture I can get as mine is broken and I can’t find one on the internet....

If you really wanted to go the extra mile you could pull the one out of your 5 lug and match it up, I’d be grateful.

But in all reality the screw driver isn’t terrible, just sketchy.

I've replaced the ignition in my 5-lug, but all I remember is just pulling out the cylinder itself. I don't recall anything else coming out.

The bottoms stuck in the ignition switch, the bottom of mine didn’t come out until I took the switch off, and then it just fell out.

I'll see what I can do. That rod goes behind the actual key cylinder right? How does it come out?

I think you should just be about to pull it out with a part of needle nose pliers, dont go break yours though if you were gonna investigate or something. I know my explanations aren’t the best.

I’d think everything should line up with the key in the acc position

Most street driven push button starts have a key for security. Turn the key 'on' then push the button.

Just like my '59 Chevy 3/4 ton, except the push button was a pedal in the floor over by the trans hump. :D See the 'pedal' right above the shifter? That's the starter 'button.

Here is an article on a Miata if you are interested. Can't really imagine it being too different than your truck..............
