I had this problem on my late 2017. The dealer replaced one of my axles and have not had a problem in 8,000 miles since. I wouldn't worry too much about about it. If you hear a low speed thump and surge in the first few hundred miles get it fixed. If you don't have a symptom, keep driving. My new work Chevy 1500 has problems too. I'll take the Tacoma over the Silverado any day.

Toyota doesn't make the rear axle, it's out sourced. Yes there could be issues with the rear axles in some trucks but your chance of getting one with an issue is rare. If you do happened to get one the axle is a very easy part to change out and they would probably give you an extended warranty after it's done.i have a 18 and no issues.

Ok. Mine was built in early-mid March so I’m hoping the issue has been resolved.

In the article it sounds like the 3rd axle fixed the issue.

    Care to say why?

My bro is looking at Silverados and I've been trying to talk him into Wrangler, Tacoma, 4runner territory.

Sounds a lot like this guy got a bad truck - ok, that happens - and perhaps the issue was compounded by some bad dealer service, but the details are sparse so who knows.

Asking Tacoma to buy back the truck? Thats pretty dumb. They are going to fix the problem, not to mention he has years left on his warranty to make sure nothing else is wrong. Why would there be a safety issue if they replace the brakes and fix the axle? Doubt he gets many participants in his class action suit.

Won't be surprised to see this guy posting a thread on here along the lines of "TOYOTA SOLD ME A DEFECTIVE UNSAFE TRUCK AND WONT MAKE IT RIGHT!!! P.S. the transmission sucks"

Lol at the transmission comment. I understand that people are pissed off about that, but at the same time there’s an endless supply of people complaining about the transmission online. You would think that people would think about that when spending $30-40k on a truck.

People definitely need to get extended test drives before buying so they don't end up bitching on the internet afterwards.

This most likely will result in a limited recall or TSB. Which is a good thing! Here are some of the Tacoma issues that originally Toyota dealers blew off.

    Tranny Fluid Low
    Bad Transmission software
    Howling From the Front end.
    Poor gluing of the hood
    Bad CPS Sensors
Poorly assembled rear ends that leaked
    Chirping High Pressure fuel pumps
    Vibrations
    Howling rear ends

And most likely ones I have missed.

At first all of these were "normal" and now there are recall and or TSB's for them.

My truck is fine. 2 mo old 2000 miles assembly mexico. G em during the 70's when they were making absolute junk did this at a local axle plant allegedly. Re calibrate equipment to pass the less round and or stick axles in a freezer for a week or two that wouldn't pass hardness tests then quickly retest.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve got my fingers crossed hoping that I don’t have any issues.

Doubt it. If you had out of round axles you would know it.

Things I don't like about the Silverado:
-clock and radio randomly reset while driving
    - 14 mpg
-transfer case will lock into 4WD and won't come out without a dealer reset, and the dealer can't get the truck in until the following week
    - radiator leaked and needed replacement
    - crappy, clunky downshifting and occasional searching for gears
    - seat that was even more uncomfortable than the Tacoma and need to be altered by an auto upholsterer
    - I had two older Silverados that started leaking oil from every gasket at 112,000 miles. My older Tacoma had 235,000 and did not leak or burn oil.

Let me add to that list. I had a 2012 Silverado that had warranty on it when I traded it in. The truck only had 50K on it when I dumped it. The truck constantly burned oil. My #7 spark plug would foul from oil being pump into the cylinder from the PVC system and a poorly place oil pressure relief valve that sprayed oil on the underside of #7 piston. The motor constantly leaked oil and was back three times to the dealer to repair the oil pan leak. Do a google search on 5.3 motor variable displacement oil burning.

The one good thing about the Silverado was decent fuel mileage, approx. 21 mpg highway.

How bad was your howl? I’m surprised they did a buy back over just noise. Or did your diff have actual damage?
