How To: Replacing Carrier Bearing

Thanks for the write up. Read this about a dozen times before doing mine this weekend. Didn't have anything good to mark my everything to keep it lined up, but the marks on the drive lines from the factory helped. No issues at all.

 

Hi everyone, long time reader, first time poster...

One thing I have always done when replacing this bearing, that I don't see mentioned anywhere in the thread, is to pack the bearing and surrounding void with grease when/before installing. This has definitely added longevity to the bearing for me over the years. The one time I had a shop do this job for me, it failed the next summer, and when I uninstalled it, it was dry. Here in MN the salt and sand in winter will trash these bearings. I also fill the metal bearing housing with hi-temp silicone, as I have seen mentioned, to beef up the surrounding rubber insulation. Just wanted to get this in there for people's installs! Cheers

 

I did mine a week ago, and I have the same noise when I start going. No vibrations and don't notice any other rattling. Did yours work itself out like your dad said or did u have to fix anything?

 

I also wanted to chime in on this. I installed a new one about a year ago, and then went on a long road trip (3k+miles), and when I checked it along the way, it was hot. Just like you guys are describing, blazing hot, and the silicone I had used to beef up the rubber surround turned from clear to black in about 1000 miles from the heat. It hasn't failed yet, and it has about 10k miles on it since it was new, but I am experiencing a vibration at 1900rpm that I'm guessing is the center bearing, so maybe it is shot. Like I said in my previous post, I used high temp silicone this time, so hopefully that adds some life. I also have the "beefed taco" bearing drop support that I ordered from the manufacturer, if you don't know about that part, I can definitely share a link. Cheers

 

Wait, does the bearing need to be greased? I replaced mine and it still squeaks

 

The first replacement bearing I bought came in a box that had a sticker over the opening that said "Pack bearing surround with grease before installation". That was a no-name brand bearing, but I think it is a good idea. No other replacement I've gotten has said anything about it, but it is definitely not going to hurt anything. The real problem is that you have to have the driveshaft in two to make it happen. I've read some interesting posts where people have retrofitted a "pillow block" style bearing, that is greasable. It ends up vibrating too much through the body. SoS on the stock one, the rubber bushing is actually doing a big job, isolating the driveshaft from the frame, essentially. Super simple, complicated as hell!

Replaced mine last night. It was so worn out, no puller was needed to remove it from the shaft. Made it a very easy job.

 

Am doing my CB and 3 U joints this weekend. Rock auto has the

$32 Spicer 5-1330-1x U-Joint Kit

Spicer 5-1330-1x u joint($25.00 ea) and drivetrain America has the spicer carrier bearing ( exact same as oem) pn: 5002007 for $75.00. Way better than 150.00+ for the same part.

 

Take some pics. I am doing the u joints and cb very soon. Interested to see how it all goes.

 

Will do my best to get some good ones and update soon after all is good.

 

Did this today. The yoke was really stuck on there. BFH and torch wouldn't budge it. Came up with this little tool with some scrap aluminum stock. Worked great.

Awesome thread! Just did mine today and this made it hella easy, also gave me the confidence to tackle this job. Reduced vibes by 75%, I believe the other 25% is gonna go away once I do the rear U joint, I'll find out tomorrow or the next day depending on what's up. Replaced OEM with a cheaper stamped one (SKF i think), in my 2000 tacoma 4x4 with 220k mi.

 

@super g - 3 U Joints? Why do I keep counting 6 - 4 on the rear drive shafts (transfer case, 2 right behind the carrier bearing & 1 into the rear diff) and 2 on the front drive shaft (front of transfer case & at front diff). I greased the rear 4 today.

 

He's got a 2nd gen.

 

I have an 09( 2nd gen I believe) and only did the rear drive shaft. The front only spins in 4x4 and don't get much time for that anymore until winter comes and we get some snow. Yes, there are a total of 5 at least on the dcsb versions.

 

mine as well. I only put a small amount inside the metal bell collars on both sides. did you put much more?

 

What exactly are you packing? Isn't this a sealed bearing or no?
