Paint/coating peeling - what to do?

I bought my 2007 tacoma from my brother-in-law 4 years ago. It has been great, but just within the last 6 months, it looks like a coating over the paint is starting to peel. I have tried to load photos. Even the hard leer bed cover if bubbling and peeling. He did live in Kinsport, TN where the air quality was terrible because of the Eastman chemical plant, but didn't know if that might have effected it. Any others have paint problems with that year generation or suggestions to help slow down the paint peel? Other than that the truck has been about near perfect. Thanks

 

It happens clear coatbstarts to fail then the paint underneath. Paint shop is the only real fix.

 

Caskets - Would I need to get the whole truck painted, or can they put on a new clear coat to save the paint? No rust yet, but dang, sounds expensive.

 

That is out of my expertise. With red it is always more challenging. If you paint back same color gonna run you 1700-2000

 

Maybe for the upper panels.

 

Keep it waxed maybe even a Teflon coating applied and your clear coat won't fail

This looks like a candidate for a good sanding and bedliner refinish. Something like Monstaliner. Anything short of a full sanding and repaint is likely to be money wasted, and a professional job will run 4,000 to 5,000 I would guess.

 

Started happening to my truck, black sand pearl 2008. Heard it was a common occurrence for my year/color. Started with the roof, then the hood, then a-pillars + front fenders. Ended up getting a small piece of my truck painted every few months.

Not much you can do once it begins, I tried to paint pen when small clear coats would break out, but eventually it would just break somewhere else a month or so down the road

 

Did you have to get a new clear coat put on your truck?

And yes, clear coats do fail, even with diligent waxing.

 

Thats clear coat failure.

If its from industrial fall out I would move away from wherever the hell you live.
Most of the time that it due to improper care in cleaning and protecting your paint.

The only fix is a total repaint. Unfortunately you cannot just sand the clear off and replace that, would be nice but not possible.

You also have an unfortunate color. Red black and silver are the worst colors to have for paint damage. If you take this to a pro you’ll find not only do you have the affected panels redone but youll also have to have most of the truck “blended” to match. The new red will be shades off from the old red since red oxidizes so much.

It will be an expensive fix to have a reputable body shop fix. Probably looking at a few thousand.

You could vinyl wrap the hood and flares which might look kinda cool in black.

You could Line-X the hood and flares, would look even cooler
OR
Line-X the whole truck for probably about $2-3k

 

Can't be done.

To apply a new one you'd have to remove the old one. The process of removing the old one will damage the base coat.

Hence, it's a full on repaint when the clear bombs out enough.

One reason I insisted on my super white. Truck is a long term unit for me, single stage paint. No clear to fail. I can keep single stage cleaned waxed easier, and panel matching for potential repairs is pretty easy with white.

The plastic parts like the fender flares and bumper on my 2006 are having the clear coat failure. However the paint on the metal panels still look brand new.

 

I just posted a thread today about the same problem. My roof looked like that about 2-3 years ago, now there’s almost more rust than paint!

One shop told me over $1500 to repaint the roof.

Since the rest of the paint on my truck is looking rough I asked another shop how much to repaint the entire truck....upwards of 8 grand!!

That’s over half of what the damn trucks even worth!!

I washed and waxed it a few times a year for years till I realized a few things:
It’s a truck used for off-road hunting and fishing
The factory paint is horrible and scratches by looking at it
You can’t polish a turd paint job

 

I had my hood repainted, and it was $750. Would have been another $500 to blend into the front quarters, but i was ok with the slight color variance.

 

Repaint the roof yourself for couple hundred dollars in paint and supplies using aerosol cans. SEM and Automotivetouchup.com have base coat and 2K urethane clear coats systems in aerosol cans which can be matched to factory colors. Lots of youtube videos of people doing this and looks almost factory.
