I'm not sure how to quote several posts...so here's my try:
No names, no name calling, just observations...

As for government health care, that's something that's absolutely needed. The research is stupid clear on this, every other developed country in the world has better quality health care than we do in the US. And they all have government administered systems. Health care only becomes fair and modern when it's administered like a right, not a privelege.
Be careful with absolutes. I have been to several other countries and no, their healthcare is NOT better than in the US. Our healthcare is awesome. Many people working in healthcare in other countries have been trained here.

I work in healthcare. In the US. And I just want to point out that our system couldn't be worse if we tried.
What does that say about your work? I work in healthcare and WE ROCK! We have great patient satisfaction. Some aren't very happy with insurance though.

The main issue w/healthcare is the insurance and liability. For someone working in healthcare, I think our healthcare is outstanding. Our insurance rates, however, are high due to ridiculous lawsuits filed by those with frivolous claims. Yes, some lawsuits are valid but unfortunately most aren’t. I don’t need to have liability insurance, but my wife does. Paying that insurance, covering bills for the doctoral level education and paying to maintain license and educational units (CEUs, etc) cost a lot. We have to maintain those standards. Uncle Sam doesn’t pick up the tab for all of those.

i envision texans as people sitting on their front porches, magnum in hand with a dually superduty in the driveway.
My folks have a Cummins, not a superduty! :D

if someone walks by that isn't white, they get a serious stare down.
We don't stare because they aren't white, we stare at anyone that usually isn't there. If someone new to the area comes in, we usually keep an eye on them to watch activity. That means keeping our family/community safe. Crazy, I know. I do that wherever I move...even outside TX.

From reading this thread, I see that there are a few folks that are either still in school or recently graduated. Still following the word of the education machine and haven't had time to reach in and grab the knowledge of those around them to formulate a strong personal opinion. It is great though, that they are able be passionate about a topic.

And I started reading the thread and STILL haven't been to the links on the first page!!!

I'm not talking opinion here, I'm talking research: The US ranks somewhere in the 30s worldwide when it comes to patient outcomes in healthcare.

How you or I *feel* about our system is irrelevant. The research is good and the data are clear: The US healthcare SYSTEM (which includes everything from practitioners to reimbursement) is not effective compared to almost every other nation in the developed western world.

Yes, we have some of the best, if not *the* best, health care training in the world. But how well the clinicians are prepared is only one part of a large puzzle when it comes to providing an effective system.

The fact that the reimbursement system in the US is horrible and kills people says absolutely nothing about my work, and your implication that I do poor work because the US health system is horribly flawed is, honestly, rather rude of you. Not to mention completely baseless and outright silly.

Is a Doctor doing pro bono work in Haiti doing poor work because the resources in the country don't allow for the best medical care possible? Please.

Our patient satisfaction has been 99.x% for years now. Insurance is indeed the problem. Please don't denigrate my work baselessly.

I see from your profile (if it's up to date) that you work for the government, I assume in the air force by the icon in your name. If that's the case, and most of your patients are servicemen/woman, you work in a much better reimbursement environment than the private sector....which is de facto proof of the need for government adminstered health reimbursement nationwide.

Again, what we think is of minimal impact here. The numbers say what they say.

Tort in healthcare is only part of the problem - yes it contributes to the cost issue by causing physicians to order large amounts of unneccesary tests and care, but it's not the only problem.

The main issue, in terms of patient outcomes, is that health insurers deny needed care. They can do so legally because they have bought the people who make the laws. Have cancer that's expensive to treat? Rescinded. Had a heart murmur in 4th grade? We're sorry, your heart attack at age 77 is not covered, it's a pre-existing condition. And yes, we're keeping your premiums.

Consider: In 2009, during one of the worst economic years in the United States since the great depression, the health insurance industry made record profits. They do this through a very simple method: Not paying for care. The US system isn't hamstrung by the clinicians, it's hamstrung by the fact that the insurance industry refuses to pay them for their work, and patients often can't for lack of means. Moral clinicians will give away all the care they can, but at some point you have to keep your practice solvent.

Okay, now I think it's time for this thread to die, because it is WAY off topic AND no longer holds any entertainment value.

Opps, sorry. I should have posted this in the first message. Your words, not mine.

There are somewhere around 190-200 countries in the world.

Almost every other nation...rank 30 among roughly 200.
Much of what you have read recently most likely was produced to help further the support for a gov't run system.

    See quote above.

    Absolutely irrelevant here.

I work for people that work for benefits. Not for people that sit on their butts expecting the government to do everything for them.

Interesting...how about when the gov't has another fiscal drought? Will they come to the same conclusions?

There you go, you said it. Health insurance is the issue. I believe you might have misworded what you wanted to say to begin with. That is what I was trying to say. Instead, you fire back overly defensive. I just stated quotes and facts. Always check your facts and be careful of absolutes, they'll usually get you. Also, when you are part of a team be part of that team. I am in healthcare. We do it right. Too bad the insurers can't keep up with our standards and the lawyers are too busy finding a way to make a buck off of us.

No one wants to read a health care debate on this forum. I agree with almost everything you said, but this is not the time or place. So I'll state again STFU!

    Aw man!

I came back to see how my threesome was coming along and now it's all hijacked and silly. Boo. Boo I say.

Hate to tell you this, Derek, but very few of those 200+ countries in the world have something even sniffing at an organized healthcare system -- so when you narrow it down to the ~100 or so that do, 30th isn't exactly all that super when dealing with a country this populous.

Now I'm all flustered and upset. I really wanted Texas to secede, and I though we were making some real traction there. Damn.
