Running a narrower wheel will help keep the bead on when you air down

I can't recall for certain, but I don't think so. My first trip to AOP was two years ago.

I had a few hundred miles of awesome/normal performance from the truck, then yesterday about 5 minutes of oddness, then back to normal. The Seafoam trifecta (in oil, gas, & TB) that I did last weekend didn't make any difference.
But I did notice something new. Don't know if it's always happened or if it's totally new symptom. Can only see 4 things at a time on the Scangauge and I had some different displays up from what is usually on it so who knows.

    First, a recap:
truck always runs smooth, no rough idle or lurching or anything else odd. Very randomly and intermittently, it simply doesn't put much power to the wheels under moderate-hard acceleration and has pinging during that time. Takes forever to get up to 40+ MPH. If I let off the gas to accelerate slowly, everything sounds & feels fine, just going slow. Shift to N and rev, it revs smooth and quick like it should. During such events, the timing retards to near or below 0. Sometimes lasts a few seconds or few minutes but always corrects itself as I continue on. No CEL or pending codes. Normal maintenance stuff has never made a difference. Spark plugs, TB cleaning, MAF cleaning, fuel system cleaners, PCV valve, oil change, ATF change, etc. When it happens is totally random and unpredictable. No common threads that I can figure out. Full tank of gas, near empty tank, cold engine, hot engine, weather, grade of gas, source of gas, use of fuel additives, color of my underwear, direction the sparrow flies at noon... none of it seems to matter.

    Newly noticed:
When I noticed the power loss and timing drop yesterday, also saw the truck had switched to open loop at under 2k RPM as I tried to accelerate from a stop. I normally don't see open loop until around 4k. Also, the AFR dropped to 11.9 which is typical for open loop. AFR is generally around 14 in closed loop.

    Thinking more:
Might not be related, but maybe it is, sometimes the transmission hangs and doesn't upshift to overdrive at cruising speed after accelerating.

So, the question for you guys:
Could it be as simple as a coolant temp sensor or upstream O2 sensor that spazzes for some reason once in a while? Seems like either of those could affect all of the things I've seen and maybe be not quite bad enough to trigger the CEL.
How can I test for a condition that is intermittent and unpredictable anyway? It's been going on for over 30k miles and nothing has blown up yet but I really want to figure this out. Service techs don't care and don't know what to do since the computer isn't giving any codes.

@beertimecontinuum what are you doing with your 4.0 engine? Could I borrow parts off it maybe to help me troubleshoot so I don't spend $hundreds on a bunch of parts I don't need?

Figured it was high time to replace my leaky, uncomfortable 5 year old boots with some new ones.
