Anyone have any pictures or experiences? Basically just curious on how one sided the damage would be of a vehicle with an ARB/AP/Baja type bumper vs. a regular passenger car.

I remember seeing one a while ago that involved a Nissan Xterra with a front bumper on it.

Another question for this thread, do factory airbags still work with these offroad bumpers? Always wondered that.

I know it's not in the bumper, but I was wondering if the front end would react different in a crash and delay the airbags from deploying properly.

I also wondered that as well. There are always warning stickers about not messing with the bumpers and such.

I was going to ask/have the dealer check if I ever end up doing any maintenance there.

And one of the reasons why I wanted an offroad bumper is to guard against running into deer on mountain highways. So I'd like to see some protected wheeling rigs as well.

You are absolutely correct in your thinking.

The amount of extra 'mass' on a front bumper can/will absorb the impact and could direct the forces involved away from where they were designed and/or away from the sensors completely.

Before you buy an aftermarket bumper - I'd highly recommend you talk to the manufacturer to make sure the bumper is 'airbag compatible'.

I had a TJM front bumper/bullbar that they advertised as being airbag compatible.

My dad has an ARB on his FJ80 and he hit someone hard enough to sheer the mounting bolts and bend up one of the corners on the ARB. He and his truck were fine but he never went into detail about the person he hit....
    I'm getting one for sure.

got into a freeway pile up not long ago with a full DMZ front tube bumper w/ skid plate.. My truck def walked away far better than the truck I slammed into. I would not suggest to anyone to have a "bolt on" bumper unless its the ARB style.. The big ass bolts that bolted up the bumper to the crash beam plate ended up ripping it in half like a piece of paper. Bumper rolled up and back into the front of my truck because of it. Highly suggest welded to frame bumpers.. wouldnt have caused front end damage if it would have been

My All-Pro tube bumper is welded on.

You can weld on anything, lol.

Just because it is a traditionally bolt-on bumper, that doesn't mean you can't go a step further and weld it on as well.

Yea I know anything can be welded to the frame, I've heard about cages, sliders etc. but I don't know of a company that sells weld-on bumpers, maybe some custom job or the buyer decides to weld it, but mass produced ones, never heard of them as opposed for example sliders, everyone and their sister sells weld on and bolt on sliders, mine are custom made by me, designed to be bolted, but can be welded if I want to in the future.

I was under the impression that the purpose of a bumper is to destroy itself and save the frame hence bolt on for replacement when needed.

You need a balance between strength and yield, it's no good to save the sheet metal and frame if the passengers gets hurt.
If you increase rigidity of the frame, you need to upgrade the passenger restraining system accordingly, for example 4 or 5 point harness and seats, SR5 seats and loose comfy OEM 3 point seat belts won't cut it with a rigid frame in hard accident.

My understanding of airbag operation on the 05-present tacoma is that the actuators are located in frame rails and triggered by rate of deceleration.

After severing an 8" telephone pole with my Tacoma and factory bumper without airbag activation, I can tell you that deceleration would have to happen very rapidly.

Correct. Airbags use accelerameters to measure a sudden rapid extreme decrease to velocity. At least is my understanding. Crumple sensors would not work because you could smash them with a hammer or something and set off peoples airbags for fun. Don't try this though. Lol

My wife rear ended a minivan several years ago going around 5MPH in a FZJ80 with an ARB on it. Not a scratch on the ARB and the minivan needed a few thousand to repair.

I hit a 6 point buck in my FJ62 with ARB around 8 years ago and there was no real damage done except to my Hella fog lights.
