Fluid film claims it stops rust on contact, I couldn't tell you whether not not that were true.

If someone sprayed fluid film on rust, and it made it worse, either they weren't using fluid film, or they screwed something up. Fluid film is a lanolin oil, it will not corrode steel. It does have to be reapplied 1-2 times/year, so maybe this individual applied it once and 10 years later the truck was rusted out?

My truck has gone through 1 winter with it. My dad's truck has gone through several with no sign of rust. Living in Buffalo, our vehicles start rusting very fast, and fluid film is a product many people swear by.

From the PNW, truck hasn't seen much snow but looks like my 1990 4Runner under there.

Same out here in the West. I'm not willing to pay a premium for longevity when the frames don't last. They may have corrected it but for me, not enough years have passed to know for sure. The thin coat of black paint I'm seeing on 3rd gens is familiar and not confidence inspiring.

Alright, thanks. I'm thinking I'll give it a shot this spring and as long as the rust has not progressed by next fall I'll stick with it for winter.

Okay, Okay. Lets just say these frames do rust. You think Toyota would do you dirty? I mentioned rust on my Tacoma and the entire department rushed over with a damn field tech that happened to be there with someone from Corporate. It's a big deal to them, they spent millions on the last rust fiasco

The 1st gens were mostly hollow boxed frames where salt and water could get in and they litteraly rusted from inside out many times.

The newer frames are open and L shaped and harder for salt to collect. They seem thicker too, can’t confirm that maybe someone else can.

The front half under the cab is fully boxed, only the rear is C channel. The frames that had to be replaced on the previous generations weren't due to coating, or thickness. It was due to the makeup of the steel that was used to build the frame. Apparently the company that Toyota contracted to build the frames wasn't using steel that met toyota's spec.

    Probably sourced from Kobe steel.

That’s what happens with tarrifs, if you put a 10% tarrif on steel, they’ll just make 90% steel

In the infinite retardation whomever helped design the new Tacoma, they still thought it would be a good idea to have the AC drain tube directly over the frame on the 3rd Gens, right next to the exhaust. That was the first mod i did on the Taco.

    Not enough to list
My 16 has this. I sprayed Rustoleum rust converter over all the frame surfaces before installing my Rock Sliders. I was a little but surprised to see it but honestly, go look under a new Ford or Chevy. Half the shit under those trucks are rusted rolling off the assembly line. All the surface rust on these trucks are at the welds. I'm not worried about it.

I think people on here WAY over estimate how serious the frame problem was. I used to work for the #1 Toyota truck store in SoCal (they sold more tacomas and tundras than ANYONE), guess how many frame replacements they did? THREE.

Not 3 per month, not even 3 per year.... i mean 3 TOTAL, ever, for both first and 2nd gen.

Maybe on the east coast its a little worse but its not like east coast cars never make it to San Diego....

Either way dealerships nationwide "flooded" with them is total hyperbolic bullshit.

Well it cost them over 3 billion bucks to make right so that doesn't sound like hyperbole to me. If the whole nation had the same replacement rate as your peachy Socal rust-free dealership then it would have been a lot cheaper for them.
