You are in California, hardly anybody that lives in the southwest buys a rust belt truck, and then has a frame change in California, thats why you never did more than 3.Go back east and see how many are done monthly.

Well $3 billion was ALLOCATED as the result of a settlement agreement, that doesn't mean thats what it will cost them... you don't even know how many were effected much less their internal financials.

Either way go to your local toyota dealer and you're not going to find it FLOODED with rusting tacomas, if you believe that then go right now and take a pic at your local dealer! I'm dying to this :)

Nah, I'm not gonna do that because the height of the frame rust was years ago when the earlier trucks were getting them replaced. Hence the guy you quoted said "were".

Anyways, I was just pointing out that your so-cal anecdote is absolutely worthless because California is not a high-salt state as designated by Toyota under the campaign.

Didn't realize 3BN dollars was over estimating the severity of the issue. My dealership had pallets, a shit ton to be exact, of frames stacked up along the building a few years ago

I agree. Pretty sure 4Runners are e coated frames and that pic looks like its coated with a courser textured solution than an e-coat process provides.

I'll expand on my previous comment further. Regardless of the total amount of frames that were actually replaced. 3 Billion dollars is enough for any company to take things seriously moving forward

The runaway gas peddle fiasco cost them over $2 billion and anyone that knows anything about cars knows thats was bullshit. So a dollar amount doesn't really mean much in and of itself.

Either way I don't understand why people are so whiny about getting a FREE frame replacement, I kinda wish my first few tacomas were effected I would've essentially got a free underbody replacement! They don't just do the frames they also replace a ton of rubber, leaf springs, and whatever else is needed while they do it. The one guy I knew also supplied new suspension that they integrated into the labor. Overall sounds like a fucking awesome deal to me!

But people just love to bitch and moan don't they...

When I pay $40,000 for something it better work correctly and last without rusting in half a few years down the line.,maybe you are rich but the rest of us are not.

Fluid film and be on your way. Do it Once or Twice a year...It's cheap and easy. Or you can follow the advice of some TW members and take a wire wheel to your 40k truck

You might see if your local dealer would be willing to coat the truck or to remedy the issue but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Has the dealer at least treated you well? I usually reserve judgement about a company when their product breaks - everyone has lemons - it's how they resolve the issue that determines a company's reputation.

I bought a professional rust proofing gun and various wands, that picture is of my frame after one winter. I coated every body panel internally with rust check, and the frame with rust check coat and protect (green can) and also the frame internally with internal panel (red can) rust check.

Rust check doesn't build up like some thicker rust proofing sprays, but it doesn't need to and is very effective. In my experience I've found the thicker stuff builds up and dries out in behind creating a spot for salt to creep in and rust the now bare, exposed metal.

Basically Toyota should build frames better suited for corrosive environments, but we can do our part to prevent rust, the dealer will not help

The minute corporate says it's "Normal" that battle is basically over unless a boat load of people start complaining. The DI pumps on the FR-S sounded like crickets due to the fact that they were designed for non ethanol gas. To this day, it's still an issue for a lot of people

I coat the entire underside, including the frame. I also spray inside the frame at every single hole in the frame and totally coat the inside the best I can. I give the tech a warning that my underside is greasy and to be careful when using the lift. Not a problem yet.

For your surface spots, just get a can of rust reformer and spray it. You can then either spray paint it and fluid film or just fluid film to help inhibit any more rust.

Sad thing is, the exact issue is on my 4runner too! This was the same first mod I did as well!
