Was thinking of hitting a trail this Saturday since we're supposed to get some rain...I'd be down to do Gold and White Mountain.

Well I’ve known both of these guys for 10+ years and they’ve been wheeling with me a bunch, just not in their own trucks. So they have some knowledge but just need to practice... a lot hahah

Hey guys, having some issues.. would appreciate any feedback.. since valley of the moon I e been having intermediate steering problems, only when I turn a hard left. The steering wheel will barely budge and sometimes it'll just slightly pop and then feel normal again mid turn. I've been trying to search and I find stuff about the steering u joint but can't see how that would affect only the left side and not the right also. Thinking maybe inner tie rod, but I have no clue how to look for visible issues on those. We're supposed to drive to Orange County tomorrow morning and I'm worried about the truck causing an accident or something. It's been happening more often each day Since Sunday.

You know that sound the steering makes when you're at full turn and you have to back off a bit? It was making that sound with the wheel barely turned trying to go left. Halp please, thanks guys

X2 on this, sounds more like steering rack issue. I would say maybe the pump but since its all good when turning right there's gotta be something binding up in the rack.

The sound you hear at full lock is the power steering pump. If it is making that noise at any steering position other than full lock it means the pump is struggling and there could be something wrong with the steering rack or pump. Like said above, since its only left I would take a look at the rack.

Edit: Could also just be something binding up in the steering, ball joints, tie rods, etc.

I’d lean towards the rack. The steering pump isn’t directional so you would most likely be having the issue turning both right and left. It’s also most likely not the rack bushings. My guess would be that it’s the rack itself. You could check the tie rod by unbolting it from the spindle and see if it’s overly loose or binding.

I have had endless steering problems. Id say check the rack bolt torque. Mine were actually loose after a couple moab trails and they were installed with blue loctite. Also got occasional pop sound from inner tie rods. Last thing I did was the zip tie mod. Remove steering column cover below brake pedal on interior. There is a bushing there. And you jam some zip ties in it. I thought this was crazy at first but it worked great for me.

Okay cool, yeah I've been curious about the zip tie mod too, the steering column shakes sooo bad when off road. Hahaha feels like I'm gonna pop the steering wheel off

since we're on the subject....my rack is on it's way out, right side is leaking pretty good and starting to get a little harder to turn. Does anyone have any recommendation on a MFG to go with?

Btw, the place that did my rack last time is gonna replace it under warranty right now. So we'll see if that's the real issue. Or if they find something else. As of now....it's weird being this low to the ground...

haha, if they think they got through something tough doing White Mountain then they're going to be in for a real surprise when you take them to do Gold. Hopefully they've got sliders if they're doing Gold, or a lot of clearance
