LOL I checked out the site thanks to @riz_atx for providing the link. Absolutely awesome mod, and it looks like people are getting the results they're advertising. Added to the "to do" list!

It's definitely the real deal and if you follow this thread, you'll see that OVTune (Matt) is always working to refine/improve the tune. Totally worth it. You can read the "reviews" thread here:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/poll-ovtune-reviews-3rd-gen.535928/

Updates are free and you can reflash as needed (although it is recommended that you don't do it back to back...give it a few days or a tank of gas before you do). So if you want a refined experience that really smooths things out while making the truck actually fun to drive again, all you need is to load the 87 Octane tune. If you want an even funner ride with actual power gains, then load the 91 tune. After you've had your fill of the extra power and want to save money on gas, then go back to the 87 tune again.

Also good to know, many have taken their Taco's in for service and it was never detected by the techs who had it hooked up for diagnostic scans.

Happy Friday peeps. Just purchased my first Tacoma last week. 17' OR AT. Been reading as much as I've been able to on OV Tuning for the truck. Purchased the package Wednesday. I'm no stranger to tuning. I've primarily owned diesel trucks in the past and still have one as my weekend driver/tow pig.

I'm a little confused on the 87 and 91 octane tuning. OV website says 91/93 octane but then I've read about 87 octane tuning. So does this mean I will have options for 87 and 91 tuning? No 93 in CA...(I dont think at least). If so how big of a difference between the two in terms of drivability and power? TIA

You will get 87 and 91 octane maps

The 87 map doesn't really touch on power. It focuses on the application of power and improving drivability. The 91 map adds power on top of that

Are there downsides to running the 91 map? Increased/Accelerated wear and tear? Potential damage to the motor?

I, and everyone else here I would assume, trust Mat's judgement and tuning ability. That being said, these tunes have not been available long enough for people to ascertain any long term effects outside of probably 10-15k miles, max

Unless a massive mistake was made by the programmer, which would be immediately evident after you installed the tune, a tune like this isn't
going to cause any damage, or accelerated wear. As mZiggy said, it's about driveability, you're not bolting on a supercharger.

I've tinkered with it through OBD fusion. No noticable difference that I've seen

And for those of you that are tuned, are you running the stock exhaust and intake? I know there's minimal benefit aside from sound with exhaust and intake but with tuning would it be more beneficial?

Matt has said his tunes are build for increased power AND reliability. He (I assume) does not push the limits hard for this reason. Reliability is almost more important then power and from what I have gleaned from all the research, he takes this seriously.

Yes, until he releases his intake tube and exhaust.

I have the TRD exhaust that came on my truck, so it's sort of stock? Lol an improvement upon a non-trd exhaust i suppose. When looking at this tune, the major benefit is drivability with power increases as a bonus, rather than power with drivability being the bonus. As such, the way you look at approaching this tune should reflect that. Not being an ass, just stating a fact.

Accessory modifications will always help, but maximizing possible accessory mods that a buyer may have is not the goal of this tune

As @2016trdtacoma stated above, OVT is going to be offering bolt ons later, and those will be further beneficial

i have always ran the 87 version of 1.02 and now 1.03. can someone tell me who did a real test drive, the difference between 87 and 91. I need to fill up today and with the new tune coming soon i was wondering if it's worth the extra $10.00 a tank to go with the 91. If it is noticeable i will do it. i drive 70/30 city/hwy. i do live in a hilly state as well? Thanks!

More power is basically the difference.

Where can I find info on this new tune? Is there a link you can share?

The tune in general? If so, just Google "ovtune tacoma"

If you mean specific map updates, you're better off asking your questions here

I drove 1700 miles on 1.03 87. Switched to 1.03 91 earlier this week, have about 100 miles on it so far. I do notice a difference, city and highway. Acceleration seems smoother, and effortless. The engine just seem more eager to accelerate, likely the byproduct of increased HP / Torque. On the highway, it can hold 6th slightly better on small hills compared to 87 tune.

I was fine with city driving on 87. Wanted truck to hold 6th better on the highway, increased power in lower RPM of the 91 tune gave me that. Its about 60 cents per gallon more for 91 here, so its not exactly a easy decision for me to switch, but I think its worth it for the extra power.

If Mat specifically dyno and optimize a 87 map (like he did with 91), he would bring in new customers, who don't want to fill up 91, but want little bit more power and torque. I ditch the 91 and load the optimized 87 tune in a heartbeat.
