Gear Oil- 80w-90 vs 75w90

Background: Only have 23K on my truck , but its almost 5 years old, so next weekend will be changing fluids on both differentials and the transfer case.

Having a real hard time finding

75w-90, but 80w-90 is everywhere.

No biggie using the 80w-90 for all three changes right?

I just used Lucas 80-90 regular (not synthetic) and from what i read on here, it’s totally fine

I went to Pep Boys and they had Mobil 1 75-90 synthetic for like $11ea...

 

no biggie, but you might see a hit on the MPGs not too much cause 80w90 usually a DINO oil will have a thicker viscosity range than the full synthetic 75w90. the manual calls for a super thin 75w85 GL5 which has a very low/thin viscosity range at certain temps. mainly for getting the best MPGs. personally I would try to get a 75w90 gl5 full synthetic like Valvoline Syn 75w90 it has a closer/closest ive seen viscosity range to the Toyota rec'd 75w85 but will give better protection.

These are good to have on hand for when you need them, but i have changed mine 3 or 4 times and never replaced them. No leaks in 90k. No antiseize either, but i'm in dry a$$ SW OK.

 

80w/90 in the rear diff, 75w/90 sythetic in the t-case and front diff. 75w/90 is ok in the rear diff too. But don't put 80w/90 in the t-case or front diff.

 

Forgot to add if you have the LSD rear end use 75w/90 and add limited slip additive

 

fyi pepboys ebay store has mobil 1 full syn 75w-90 gear oil (with LSD additive) for 9.34 a quart with free shipping (over 35 bucks) Purchase 6 quarts to fill front diff (1.6qt) tcase (1.4) and rear axle (3)

I dont believe I need the LSD additive, can I still go with the Mobil 1 ?

 

You sure can, it wont harm anything in the tcase / diffs by having it.

Its exactly what i run in my truck in all 3 spots, never an issue.

 

you wont need LSD additive for your year MOBIL1 is fine to use

Guy doesnt know what he's talking about.

Ill be using 80w90 when I do my change I wasnt going to drop $10 a qt for 75w90 when I could get the 80w90 for a third the cost.

I read and read. Lots of owners use 80w90 vs 75w90. At the end of the day its gear oil.

 

its kinda of like motor oil there really isn't any best, there is what the manufactorer recommends weight, GL4 or GL5, what your willing to pay. the best oil is the one that gets changed at the manufactorers recommended OCI and is at the manufactorers rec'd viscosity.

Why the LS version? They quit using a mechanical LS in these trucks in '09 (I believe that's the year).
