Oh.... I used to have that when using cruise control.... I'd come to a small hill, it wouls downshift to 5th and climb hill and then NOT shift back into 6th, without me giving the gas pedal a shot.....

Filled the tranny and all that weird shit is gone.... It was 1 1/2 liters low.....!! You might want to check fluid level physically (not Techstream)... Good luck..

There was a TSB that was released for the 2016's that addressed that issue. I had the same issue with mine and the dealer performed the TSB (firmware update?) and the problem went away.

Checked the fluid in my transmission yesterday and it came up almost a quart short. It did take a long time (~ 4hrs) for the hot engine to cool down so that the temperature was within the correct range. I used the non-techstream procedure in post 18 to monitor the temperature. One thing I found out the hard way is that your engine needs to be running to get an accurate indication of the fluid level. Initially I added half a quart of transmission fluid and went through the procedure, when I removed the overflow plug only a couple drops came out so I knew I needed to add more. Turned off the engine and added the remaining 1/2 quart. Went through the temp sense procedure a 2nd time and when I removed the overflow plug some fluid started coming out but not a big amount so I knew I was close to the right level so decided to turn off the engine and let it finish draining. That was a mistake. After turning off the engine and looking underneath I could see tranny fluid pouring out of the overflow valve. Quickly screwed the overflow plug back in. Added some additional tranny fluid and went through the procedure again but finished with the engine running :).

Yeah, when that TSB finally came out, I got that done as well....seemed to make a very minor difference after I had filled it though.

Did anybody with a TRD DCOR with build date of 08/17 or later get the trans TSB done on their truck?

So it’s been a week that they’ve had the truck and called them today to get an update. They will not check the ATF because Toyota didn’t advise them too and states the 5th/6th gear issue is a known issue and hopefully Toyota will come out with an update. They had a Toyota engineer come out and test it to see for himself to get “Measurements”. So a whole week of nothing. I also asked about the TSB Rev 1 update and they said that has nothing to do with this and aren’t updating it.

5th and 6th gear is an issue because of low ATF fluids, members are reporting up to 1.5 Qts low.

I’m aware the auto trans holds a lot more than MT and Diffs, what if you had only 2 of 3 Qts in your rear diff or 4 of 6 Qts in your engine? It wouldn’t be good.

Toyota works slow. When they came out with the Rear Diff TSB the dealer kept my truck for 6 weeks and that was fairly short compared to many others on the forum. At least you got a good loaner!

So they said they “checked” the ATF fluid by pulling the plug out and it was full. I thought there was a better method?

Just picked up the truck. The Advisor said the rep knew it was an altitude issue and there supposedly working on an issue. They also cleared the shifting memory and still did the same thing. So just gotta hope that something gets released.

    Hey Andrew
You are posting in a low fluid thread .
Is there something going on with your truck in 5th and 6th that other members havnt seen yet .
I suggest starting a fresh post so we can keep track of the issue

I’m not exactly sure, there’s a lot more owners in here which have auto trans that can chime in.

Thanks for mentioning that, I am getting ready to perform the fluid level check this weekend, would have turn off the engine to check if I didn't see your post.

Went back and read the procedure again, sure enough, the engine needs to be running, and in "automatic transmission fluid temperature detection mode" in order to accurately check fluid level.

Live and learn. I learned to do it when it's cool out. I did it when it was about 85 degrees with truck that hadn't run in a few days. It got to temp in under 5 minutes. I didn't think I'd have enough time to measure and all that before it got out of temp range so i just did it early next morning while it was still cool out.

Does anyone know if low fluid is a problem on 2018 models?
