What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Just remembered something. Try and find out what store supplies your local welding school/tech college. In my case its Arc3 Gases, but anyways they give big discounts to school aged looking people.

 

Just bought the uniden, now I'm trying to install. Where do you guys splice the wires to? Radio? I have no electrical experience

 

Haven’t installed mine yet, but I was planning in using the add-a-fuse things for the truck radio fuse on the interior fuse panel

I walked into AirGas and the guy gave me a student discount without even asking. I'll have to check what other welding suppliers are around.

 

Any of you guys run the magnet mount antenna? Thinking about returning it and getting the fire stick fire fly

 

I had a Wilson 1000 magnetic mount on my roof. Worked 1000000000x better that the firestick on the tailgate.

Nice thing about the Wilson 1000 is that the whip can be unscrewed from the base.

 

Thinking about getting the uniden 520 with a wilson antenna haven't decided what length or where to mount it. I don't want in at the front though

 

I have a cobra magnet antenna bought it to get me started. I wanted to use it Wednesday

 

Make sure you buy an SWR meter or you'll never get the thing working

 

Is that just to get it tuned??

 

Yes. I had a CB setup in my truck but I could never get it tuned. A good ground plan is really really important. Can't have a CB without tuning it first

 

I'm going to need to watch some videos on tuning a cb lol

 

It's pretty simple. Go drive into a wide open field without any obstruction and connect the tuner in series with the coaxial of the antenna and the coaxial jumper (that you need to buy) to the radio.

Do a little thing with the knobs and you're good. I forget the exact procedure.

 

The center of the roof provides the best ground plane for CB or HAM. Magnetic mount is easier than drilling a hole in the roof. To keep it in place, for example when hit by brush, use good gaffer tape to hold down all of the cable, limiting any movement.

 

I know just the place. A corn field in the next county flat as glass and emptier than a desert lol so to speak

Done that it's bad but imho new york city is worse. Could do some cooking and by time your down move up 4 car spaces. Especially if your driving a manual just leave it in first gear. Least that's what it was like the day I drove through
