EASY tweeter upgrade! (3rd gen non-JBL)

I believe the JBL system tweeters use an entirely different connector (a two pin vs a four pin).....so the Subaru kicker tweeters will not work on the JBL.

 

was thinking about getting these tweeters... but don't know if the filters will fit under the dash.

Any pics of the dash when its open?
I plan to get the harness from ********* and make the adapter myself to mount the tweeter.

I believe that these tweeters are a bit better than the kickers because I've heard them before.

Any advice? at the end of the day, excluding labor, the tweeters will end up costing the same amount.

They may be better, but the others are complete drop-in replacements. I'm not sure about fit under the dash covers since you'd have to come up w/ a mounting bracket, so there are more variables to what you are wanting to do.

 

yeah making the braket is not a big deal.

My main concern is mounting the filters somewhere. Maybe along the pillar? is there any room there when you take off the pillar cover?

 

has anyone found out the part number for the tweeter plug/harness?

 

Can't exactly remember, but you may have room under the speaker if it's not mounted too deep in the corner.

 

If that picture is correct (meaning the filters aren't much bigger than the tweeters), then you will have plenty of room in the dash for it. I just used "industrial" velcro for my filters (but I put mine in under the kickpanel trim since my filter is for a component set that also goes to the woofer inside the front door).

It's a deep hole under the tweeters, so make sure you don't drop it...otherwise you'll have a helluvatime trying to get it back out!

Now the only thing I need is the harness for them. I don't want to splice the OEM cable. I just want to plug and play....

Also found this great do it yourself video on YouTube. Besides the removal and installation it would help someone figure out how to reuse the factory harness.

I’ll be holding on to the factory speakers for a while so I bought the harness on eBay already. Hope it helps someone in the same boat as me who doesn’t want to use the kicker plug and play and use a different brand or better model.

Just ordered my Subaru tweeters! Thanks for the info, @IndyFastlane, and Tacomaworld for helping me spend that pesky disposable income (again).

 

Got my tweeters today, installed them after work! Definitely improved the clarity from lower volume, all the way to cranked!
Installation was pretty easy, just awkward, due to limited space right next to the windshield.

 

Ordered full set of all 6 speakers.

Went with the subbie tweets
Front door - Kicker 44KSC6904 (2 way)
back door - Kicker 43CSC674 (2 way)

2 sets of Dynamat 10x10 sound deadening
2 rollers for Dynamat install!

Went with Crutchfield since less that A-zon and free door adapters and wires!

Saw mention about tweets being wired out of phase.. anyone confirm that it's supposed to be wired that way? I'm an audiophile and build my own equipment
(home stereo), I would never wire out of phase UNLESS I did something wrong wiring up my amp.
Given the crappy speakers installed, doesn't seem to me that they (Toyota) would have spent a great deal of effort trying to "phase" crappy speakers..??

IF they wired them out of phase - could be a reason they sound so bad... just a thought!

Not really a fan of kicker but I do know they last a long time.

I got the Alpine SPR-10TW. Will be installing when I get the wire from eBay.

 

Completed my installation today !
Took my time - Bout an hour or so. Didn’t want to break anything. I did disconnect the negative to be safe.

Sound - much improved.

Bout 96 Dollars off of Amazon. Delivered in one day with Prime. Also purchased plastic removal trim kit which was delivered today.

 

I 3D printed my Alpine Speaker adapters.
What is cool is that the alpines have a thread in the casing at the bottom.
I'll document and create my own thread and link it.

I've been searching and reading these threads and would like to get new speakers for my truck. I have the non-JBL Entune Premium head unit. I get that these Subaru Kicker tweeters are plug and play, and have read through this entire thread about several recommendations for the door speakers. Still, I'm unclear about the component speaker setup and how it would work if I wanted to install speakers with separate tweeters and woofers. I'm tempted to go with the Subaru tweeters and Kicker 3-ways for the front doors. However, I wanted to consider all the options if I'm going to the trouble of making this change.

I am confused about the compatibility of component systems and how the wiring would work. Are there just 4 channels coming from the head unit, or do the door and dash speakers have dedicated lines from the head unit (6 channels)? Apologies if this has already been answered somewhere. I've installed many head units and speakers in the past, but when I did there were only 4 channels total and the components were new/not replacements of different components.

Would these be "plug and play" with Crutchfield's included adapters if I purchased them? Or would I need to re-wire to make them work? For the rear doors I'll go with 2-ways so those aren't an issue. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions here.

 

There are only 4 channels coming from the non-JBL headunits. The tweeter and the front woofer are wired in series and the tweeter has a simple capacitor that acts as a basic HPF. If you take out the tweeter, the woofer will not work unless you add your own wiring (or splice them to bypass it). If you are not worried about cutting/splicing a couple wires, then I'd recommend getting proper components that come with a dedicated crossover. You just have the stock speaker wires go to the crossover and then run some new speaker wires to the new speakers in the OEM locations.

 

The tweeter upgrade provides a much cleaner and punchier sound! Thanks for this thread, was well worth the cost.

Used an extra bicycle plastic tire lever slightly filed down thinner to get the parts off. Also a well placed fingernail helps to get the lever started.

Broke one of the tabs off the first speaker cover due to bad technique. Learned to twist the lever and move it around more often.

 

Installed mine tonight, purchased on eBay from a Subaru dealer with a coupon that got them down to $77 shipped. Took maybe a 1/2 hour to install including disconnecting the battery. Only listened to a few songs so far but these sound so much better than stock. Tomorrow I’m driving 200 miles so I’ll get a better feel.

Surprised I haven’t seen mentioned how much heavier the stock speakers are than these. Maybe it’s all in the bracket?

I should be installing a subwoofer next weekend too, but that’s a different thread.

 

I just finished the job and it sounds soooo much better. Way crisper its awesome! The only pain I had was getting the bolts back into the passenger A pillar, that stunk. But its all back together now and would definitely recommend to do this for anyone. Also, I did not disconnect the battery.
