I didn't realize warranties were negotiable. Crap.

They tried to sell me on all sorts of crappy packages but I ended up going with the 10yr/120k extended warranty for $1995.

Good to know since I'm local to this dealership. My friend, who was a finance manager for many years, said that you can usually get extended warranties added on even after you purchase the vehicle so I might give it a try.

Is that a Toyota Platinum Warranty or some kind of 3rd Party Warranty?

I ran my first generation Tacoma 150,000 miles. My second gen went for 137,000 miles before I traded it in on my third-gen. (I've got nearly 30,000 miles on it.) I have never purchased an extended warranty and never needed one.

For most of my two-decade career, I was issued GMCs. Lots of off-road work. We'd turn them over at about 80,000 miles and all that I drove had experienced serious issues by the end of those miles.

None of my Tacomas have had issues that weren't worked out by the standard warranty. (And as rare as chicken teeth.)

Someone with more energy than I have should slap up a poll: How many have used their extended warranty?

Eh, third gen hasn't been around enough to rack up enough miles to make it a large enough sample size.

Toyota sells just under 200,000 Tacomas a year. So there are at least 450,000 third-gen Tacos that have logged millions of miles.

    That's a database.

Extended warranty doesn't kick in until after, what, 36k miles? You're failing to factor in those miles. Or maybe I'm just wrong. Either way.

Make sure you read the fine print too and know what it actually covers, especially if you go with a 3rd party extended warranty.

I declined any sort of extended warranty. Take for example a 8 year/100k warranty, the factory power train covers 5 years/60k so really what you are paying is only for 3 years/40k. Sure if it's bumper to bumper there is some added benefit but power train is the expensive stuff where the real benefit would be.

My advice would be taken whatever you are going to spend on a warranty and set it aside. Start adding $20 a month in and by the time your truck starts needing repairs you'll have plenty saved away. If your truck runs fine through the warranty coverage you don't get that money back.

When I purchase a fully loaded vehicle with lot's of electrical and computer stuff I will shop for an extended OEM manufacturer warranty. You got plenty of time as long as you purchase before original warranty expires. Definitely don't pay full price from any dealer, shop around for the best deal. From my experience, a plus of having any kind of warranty on a vehicle whether the basic 3/36 or extended (even if you never use it) comes at resale. I usually sell my vehicles 6 months to a year before the warranty runs out. I add the cost of warranty to the sale price and have no problems selling. Most buyers would like a warranty to cover any issues that may arise then to chance it. For peace of mind and resale value it works for me. Do what works for you.

www.fd-warranty.com has the best prices I've seen and they are a Toyota dealership selling Toyota factory warranties. You may have to jump through a small hoop if you don't live near them as Toyota now requires your address to be in the same state as the dealership where you buy the warranty. The guy who handles the sales will give you various options on workarounds though.

If companies didn't make money offering extended warranties, they would not offer them. Who's really come out ahead at the end.

depends.. 8 out 10 may not ever need the extended warranty and they will make money on those people. those other two may use the shit out of that extended warranty, the company will lose on those two guys but make a bunch on the other eight. kinda win win in a way. the two that needed the warranty will believe they came a head. the 8 that didn't will have piece of mind which counts for something..

I wonder if the extended warranty financials are more complex than pure actuarial data like normal insurance. After all, if you pay up front, the sale revenue is higher. The dealership mgmt, salesperson, and F&I guy like that. If you finance it, the loan revenue is higher too. If you have the extended warranty, you’re more likely to follow the service recommendations and maybe get it serviced at the dealer ... the service department likes that too. And, if you do make a claim and it’s resolved to your satisfaction, you’re more likely to buy another Toyota and another extended warranty. There’s big data involved here ...
