Zerks & Grease

Question regarding zerk fittings, and grease....and yes...I used the "SEARCH" function...but didn't find relevant info for my truck.

I have a 1998 4x4 2.7l tacoma that I need to put a grease gun to...anyone have a .pdf manual that shows the locations of these? What type of grease should I use?

Help me stay out of the "stealership" scam =).

Assuming everything is still stock, the only thing greasable is the drive shaft. There are 8 grease fittings on my 02 4x4 on the 3 sections of drive shaft (3 on the front drive and 5 on the rear drive). I seem to remember it was the same for my 98 also.

I use white lithium grease.

 

Alrighty sounds good. Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming you don't use the aerosol can stuff...was trying to find some white lithium grease that would fit inside a grease gun...or am I "doing this wrong?" haha

Edit: found it in the tube....and this stuff is EXPENSIVE.

 

I read a real detailed write up, either on here or the TTORA forums, I can't remember, but yeah, all you have to grease is the drive-shaft.

 

Check the FSM. You don't want to overgrease the shafts. The spiders can take a few squeezes. FSM for 5vz, 4x4 calls for 2 different grease applications. Spiders take lithium #2. Slip yoke and cardan get Moly. Skol.

You do not want to use white lithium grease. That is completely the wrong lubricant. Don't confuse "lithium" with "white lithium." You need an NLGI 2 grade grease.

All the drive shaft yokes and the double-cardan joint take molybdenum disulfide NLGI 2, and the U-joints (spiders) take lithium disulfide NLGI 2, I think. It's in the FSM. It should also be in the back of your owner's manual.

All the auto stores have it. And you will find that it is far cheaper.

Overgrease

 

I have 9 zerks on my taco...Just use "Lucas Red N' Tacky #2" all around"...Great Product!!!

It almost seems like this is one of those "grey" areas. I'm curious if there is a definite way this service NEEDS to be done. I suppose it could be said that the actual "Factory Service Manual" is what is best for the truck, but people have been doing things different than the original manufacturer for their vehicle for who knows how long...hmm.

 

If the driveshaft takes in too much grease it can "hydrolock" and damage the T-case. Skol.

 

Thanks skol. I was unaware of that. I hope I did not overgrease. I put it in until I could see some come out.

 

On the shaft you will see more of the piston(shiny metal surface) as more grease is applied. You can always back out the zerk bolt and back up on a curb to compress the shaft and squeeze out the excess grease. Not a big concern on the spiders except they tend to fling the grease all over the undercarriage. Skol.

Are you referring to the slip yoke? And when you say spiders, don't you mean U-joints?

But yeah, if there's too much grease in the slip yoke, it can't compress properly during suspension travel. When you're greasing it, as soon as you see it moving outwards, that's a good time to 'stop' greasing.
