just had my first complimentary service done at 5K miles on my 2017 Tacoma TRD sport 4X4
They didn’t do an oil change because the manual calls for an oil change every 10k
I was thinking of doing it myself but I checked the oil and it still looks perfect. I’m old school and used to changing oil every 3-5K miles

I know it’s fully synthetic now and much better but should I really go 10K miles ?

    Any thoughts ?

You can easily go 10k miles and that’s coming from someone who changes closer to 5k.

TGMO 0W20 is an expensive full synthetic, get the use out of it!

I plan to change mine at 5000, just to make sure any grit and shavings from the break-in period are removed. After that, I'll stick with the 10,000 mile suggestion.

You won't hurt anything changing early but Toyota is only going to do it at 10k and 20k. I did a 5k change and sent my sample to Blackstone, they recommend I try 7k OCI based on that sample. Mobil 1 has a $12 Rebate going on right now, so you can snag some 0w-20 from Wal-Mart and save a few bucks.

I changed my own oil at 5,000 miles. Really dirty and ready for a change. Don't understand how Toyota thinks 10K is OK.

I changed mine at 5k, dealer did 10k, at 15k I did it again and installed fumoto valve. Dealer did oil again at 20k, pretty soon I'll do another at 25k. When I do that change I'll be sending a sample to Blackstone, and base further interval off of their suggestions.

5k interval may be overkill but oil and filters are cheap if you diy. It's good getting under the truck and checking things out.

Even with technology in oil getting better when you have a new truck and engine in this case I would stick to 5k-6k the life of it. Also my dealership did an oil change every 5k even though toyota states it can be done at 10k and I asked why and apparently they don’t feel confident leaving a new truck with oil for 10k miles

I had em do the first at the 5k service. I'll probably stick with the 10k from there on out though.

It relates more to emissions and environment, the oil is good enough to leave but if you're keeping it you may as well do 5k oil changes.

I leased mine and just stuck to 10k, its gone now and I never had to pay more out of pocket for no reason.

Toyota suggests every 10,000 under normal conditions. sooner if you drive in dusty conditions or stop and go driving. It's in your manual. I personally do 5000 intervals.

Would it make a difference if you told the dealer that you met the "severe use" conditions?

Absolutely a correct statement. I got my first toyotacare oil change at He one year point. Only had 1,000 miles on the odometer. The next oil change was a year later. Had 2,500 miles on it at the time. I don’t go by number of miles. I change oil in the anniversary month of purchase.

Dealer has me at every 5k miles.

I change it at 5k or sooner due to the fact that i work less than 3 miles from home:cool:

Glad to see there are so many engineers in this thread that are smarter and more knowledgeable than the engineers who designed the engine...
