Rear differential vent mod for 3rd Gen?

Did a quick search to see if theres a 3rd Gen Rear diff. vent mod, didn't find one.

Anybody have a link to one?

Is there a similar mod for the front diff?

 

The front diff already vents into the engine bay.

So I take it that the front diff, xfer case and (manual) transmission box are run into engine bay and with 2-way caps already?

There’s quite a few rear diff breather mod threads out there to include some DIY stuff.

 

So I can’t get the nut loose from the stock diff breather and have start almost rounding the corners in the nut. Even used a penetrating oil...any suggestions???

 

Locking pliers, plumbers pliers???

 

Use a high quality wrench, that fits. If you use a socket, use the least amount of teeth, like a hex socket, more surface area.

 

So, i did a water crossing near as tall as the tires 3 times - and no water got into my rear diff with the factory breather.

Is there much point to this mod?

Do you know if water got in your breather or your differential?

 

Front diff and front diff actuator vent come to the engine bay by the fuse box area.

Auto trans (and likely manual trans) breather goes up to top of the bell housing.

Transfer case actuator vents into transfer case, transfer case vents via a breather that lays on top of the trans.

The stock breather is a one way valve, Allows air out but not in. Not a problem on a cool / cold diff when doing a water crossing. Problems come in where you take a warm axle, and dunk it, creating a vaccum and pull water in via the axle or pinion seals. Yes there is definitely a point to the mod.

 

Which also means don’t use thin hosing or a fitting that holds itself shut under vacuum - get a filtered fitting that allows it to breathe freely.

 

It was 116*F and i’d been driving for 4 hours or more, i’m sure that diff was hot as hell when i went through.

Didn’t check my front diff because i didn’t have an allen, but there was no water in anything else.

Well, excluding my interior!! Got about two inches of water inside and the swamp stank will not go away

 

Use a 6 point socket or wrench, not a 12 point.

 

Breather part number for extended breather allows air in and out. whole point to extend is to get it above water so it can breath in and out and not create a vacuum.

 

How do you know that no water got in?
