My first service at 5K miles

Changed mine at 1,500 miles to get any shavings out for the break in period. But I wouldn’t go past 7500 on a regular oil change even if Toyota says 10k

 

You could put labs out of business if you can analyze oil by looking at it.

Even more awesome if that skill works for all petroleum products!

Double-check that it includes an oil change at 5k or 6month. It should be next visit.



My truck is due for the 6mo/5k service and received a reminder pamphlet from ToyotaCare just today. It doesn't state they will change oil at 5k/6mo, but just, "Inspect and adjust all fluid levels". Fine print states they cover normal factory scheduled service, which is I think is 10k.

I am going with Toyota engineers on this one. I am on my third company car, Toyota Corollas, and they are serviced at 10K miles and I put over 100k on them before new one gets ordered. Never had anything but oil changes done. May do a little sooner (probably time, not mileage) on new 18 OR but only because it mostly sits in driveway or garage all week until Sunday to drive to golf course.

 

I have a 2017 SR 4 cyl manual. At 5000 first service no oil change. At 9900 miles or exactly one year from new the oil was changed at the 10,000 mile service. The sticker the dealer /service tech put in the window says the next oil change is due in 5000 miles.

 

These types of threads always pop up and will never die.

 

I thought rebate would work with Walmart as well on Mobile 1 but according to the retailers included I dont see Walmart on the list.

I also think 5k should be max on a first oil change and that is when I will change mine. A lot of people can easily go 10k. The oil does not wear out but gets contaminated so driving habits are important. I drive 25 miles one way of pretty much highway to work everyday so I feel I can get a longer interval, but the guy that drive 3 miles to work and back needs to change more due to the engine really not getting to full temperature and boiling off condensation and slight amount of combustion that by-pass the rings. Add to it EGR going back into the intake and the engine breathing system. So you have a proverbial stew of stuff. I am a great believer in synthetic oil and it is well worth the investment. I use in all my equipment from chainsaw to outboard

 

I asked the dealership to change my oil at 5k, and they did the second around 14k. I did my own at 23k when I fluid filmed and rotated the tires. Going to change again soon- 30k and then will go to every 10k thereafter- nice round numbers- easy to remember.

My old truck it was every 3k, so at 200k miles, it was about 67 oil changes! The new truck will get around 20 for the same mileage- very cool.

I have read that 10k changes is a conservative number, could probably squeak it to 12k without issue, so feel good about changing every 10k.

An old friend told me about his dad and his dad's best friend- after retirement, they would get together most Saturday mornings and work on their vehicles- sometimes the oil would get changed out with way less than 3k, because it was more about doing something enjoyable (wrenching), than what was necessary.

Changing the oil on a vehicle is good therapy, sometimes....lol

Even though Wal-Mart is not listed they will accept it, I have been doing it for years and always get the Rebate

 

I would consider this "Special Operating Conditions" and change accordingly. With that said I did my first oil change at 1500 miles and will do the second one at almost 3k. I don't drive it much so I hit the time limit faster than the miles. Doesn't bother me - I like doing the PM stuff.

0w-20 oil with all the rebates-- I'm currently sitting at around 6- 5 qt jugs in my garage! Haha. But between both our cars at 7500 OCI it'll get used up pretty quick. Wife drives about 1000 miles a week

 

Just an FYI, Meijer also has 5 qt jugs right now for $23. So comes out to 11 dollars for the jug

 

...and you hit upon the REAL reason most hobbyist's or enthusiast wants to change their oil.
Not because it is dirty (if you changed your filter it can go MUCH further than 10K)
Not because it is worn out

No, most guys change it early just because they can. It truly is one of the last things left on an automobile that a weekend warrior can still do to a vehicle. They do not have the knowledge or technology to do anything else to a modern vehicle. They get a feeling of community, camaraderie and other feel good words at places like this forum and the auto parts store.

There have been MANY Blackstone oil analysis' posted on this forum. Hell, someone linked to one in the above post! It clearly shows you can go BEYOND 10K with zero issues! Yet, for some reason, some still think they know better than the Toyota engineers AND the actual oil analysis! They want to use the "severe" schedule, knowing that the only "severe" driving most of them do is...... they never do severe driving. I know one thing, I damn sure don't know more about this vehicle than the engineers who designed it lol.

Good luck guys, keep changing your oil. Why stop at 5K though? Change it every 500 miles! Or every 50 miles! That will surely make you engine last...


And lastly, to the guy who can look at oil and tell if it's dirty or not? You have a job waiting at Mobil.

The one year oil change regardless of mileage is marketing by dealers and the oil companies to get you to the dealer to sell you upgrades, warranties, etc and use more oil.

Oil does not go bad in a bottle on the shelf or turn “acidic” just sitting at the bottom of your oil pan. It goes bad with use, engine heat, fuel and water dillution and when the additive pack is deleted. This has been shown repeatedly at BITOG with virgin and used oil.

There’s also an assumption that if you drive very few miles per year then they’re short trips and the oil is diluted. Outside of short trips where the engine doesn’t heat up or long idling, oil will last decades.

After 60K warranty, I’ll change the oil at 7500 miles with Penn Ultra Plat synthetic or similar regardless of age.
