Sony XAV-AX100

Anyone have any experience with this headunit? Installed in a second gen?

 

Car play and an actual knob to control vol I dig Sony products. Currently using Alpine 107 has car play. Major inconvenience with out a knob to adjust volume while driving or to quickly turn it down

 

I’ve installed a good handful of these. Good unit for the price. No aux input but between usb and Bluetooth, not a huge need for it.

 

Do you have any pics of ones you’ve installed in Tacoma’s?

 

Unfortunately I don’t. I work for Geek Squad and we can’t take pics of client’s property as part of our privacy policy. They’re mega strict about it

 

However, I probably wouldn’t go for this particular radio in a 2nd gen the more I think about it. It’s a good unit but the volume knob is literally all the way on the edge. Most dash kits recess the head unit a bit so the volume knob is going to be a chore to get to. Unless you have steering wheel controls and are used to using them and plan on getting a control module to retain them

 

Here is my install. I did it last week. I bought it and the wiring harness from Crutchfield. Super easy. The only thing I still need to figure out is how to get the backup camera to come on automatically with reverse.

 

If it had a touch screen from the factory (or even if it didn’t) you might get lucky and the wire is already there

If there’s nothing like that, you can always get a trigger from the reverse lights. Head to the drivers side kick panel

 

I have one in my 2012. I installed it myself. I really like it. Carplay isnt perfect, but its very handy.

 

I hooked the reverse wires from the new harness to the new radio harness that said reverse. I will try going directly to reverse lights

 

Yeah can’t go wrong there. Also good to know here it is if you ever want to wire up some extra backup lights and a switch

 

I just ordered one of these. They have great reviews and seem to be a cut above what else is available at their price range. I just need car play and Bluetooth.

 

i just got mine yesterday from Amazon need to wire it up today or tommorow. i ordered a usb extenstion off ebay to put in the aux port thats there now since this radio doesnt have a aux out

 

I got the USB extension from crutchfield that was supposed to hook up to the Toyota USB/Aux port. It didn't fit the connector on the Toyota end, so I just put the USB into one of the blank switch panels below the radio.

 

Hmm weird, I just installed mine and everything in the kit fit except the included dash kit was garbage. Plastic mounts and it didn’t line up with the radio right on any of the holes but I knew this would be the case from reading reviews. I ordered the Scoche kit off of Amazon and it worked perfectly. Metal brackets > plastic apparently

 

Yeah. I made the plastic work, but not the best. Think it must have been a bad pn on the usb extension.

 

I wouldn’t doubt it, there seem to be several different part numbers based on model year for the Tacoma.

Here’s a crappy night time shot of the head unit. I couldn’t be happier at this price point. The sound through my Alpine amp and speakers is far better than it was with the stock unit and a converter. Sony seems to be making some good stuff, especially since the last time I bought a head unit it was only maybe a $100 cheaper with half these functions and way crappier sound lol.

 

I have 2 of these head units (neither in my 1st gen) and I really enjoy them. They are good value for the money and carplay is rad. Also, theres a couple guides out there on the inet on how to wire the steering wheel controller without a module.

and I wanted to confirm what @destin_meeks said, the knob for the volume is on the far right and the adapter i used on my STi has it at a very awkward depth. It will require routering the plastic adapter piece for it to be right. but other than that, its rad.

 

I find the knob okay on my 2013 Tacoma with the Scosche kit. I think the Metra for my year is more recessed and might not be ok.

So question..reciently rode with a friend that has apple CarPlay and seemed pretty cool and gave me that itch to get it as well. Currently have a Kenwood dpx500bt
It had basic Bluetooth capabilities. My truck is 08 with basic audio controls, no phone answer etc.
