This a great reference thread, thanks LadyRed. Here is some info to help others in their search.

BFG KO2 34x10.5R17 on a 4runner 17x7 rim freestanding at 32lbs. Brand new exactly 33" tall and 10 7/16" wide. Mounted measurements to come in May.

255/85/16 BFG KM2's, 3" OME lift, Dakar's, Nitrochargers, Grey Wire Mod, ARB Bumper, ARB CKMA12 air compressor, WIts End Pacifier, Warn M8000, Uniden 520 XL CB, rear diff breather mod, full time power to aux 12V outlets, Rago Fab ditch brackets, Titan Rod Vault, Extreme LED's front and rear,
Just purchased a OME 3" lift and am wanting to run 255/85/16's as I think they look great on 1st Gen's (I have a 2004 Ext Cab). I am wanting a 16" wheel, matte black, but am having a hard time finding something that will work with these tires. Everything is coming up as 16x8, which I have read 16x7 is preferred bc the bead wont slip off when aired down. Any help or suggestions? Thanks!

would you have to regear, or recalibrate (or both) when running a 255/85/16? (3rd gen Tacoma)

most aftermarket will be 16x8 minimum .... maybe a set of OEM 3rd gen OR rims powder coated black?

The 7" wheels will make the tires look even skinnier. I don't think losing a bead is an issue really.

My concern is not much tire sidewall bulge to protect the rim off-road

Sharpish, $330 per tire CDN so $30 more per tire than a 255/80 ST Max. I wanted the snowflake so the RCMP officer writing the accident report can't say I didn't have "good" winter tires.

And yes the BFG KO's measure small as do some Duratrac sizes, no biggy. Toyo's should get bonus points for being close and Superswamper for being over size. Seems Nitto and the BFG KM's are in the middle.

Fyi, thorn birds are all show and no go. They were about as good as factory street tires.

I dunno about what your timeline of rig is but 97 to 2012??? Have a 7in width. I know it's the 05+ to ??wheels with less off set at 7" the earlier ones have more offset. If it's not a free way rig go Interco, I have lost full lugs at 70mph though with them.

Ordered some K02’s yesterday in a 255/75/17 from @Discount Tire Direct

I’ll post pics when they arrive tomorrow. Went with the 255/75 to get a C load which weighs 47lbs instead of a 255/80 which look like they are all E’s

Ripped off all four mudflaps. Scratches all down both sides 6112’s up front on 3rd notch 5100’s in back with Toytech 1” block Skids & sliders from SOS Concepts I got rid of the 1” block and put on Wheelers 1 1/2” progressive AAL. SPC UCA. Be sure your standing on the drivers side when reading the instructions! I swapped sides so many times that I can swap UCA’s in 15 minutes. I put in the 3/4” spacer to eliminate the Taco Lean, and just got my 4th alignment. Traded the OEM rims for 17” Sport rims and a bora bora 1” spacer. I got my Firestone 285/70/17 MT2’s. Pelfreybilt gas tank skid and hi-lift jack should be here Friday. Looking at bumpers, but I think they will wait for next year. So far I’m happy with my build. I’ve done it all myself, leading to a lot of cussing and frustration, but it’s all mine.
    2012 OR.
I’ve been told that I have 8-8.5” rims with 4.5” backspacing.
I haven’t measured them personally so I’m not sure.

Not sure about the OR, but I have a 12 TX/Pro. Different wheels, but OR suspension. I have a 7.5" wheel. I think maybe FJ's are the same. Might be an option, however the lugnuts are a bitch. I replaced them with regular lugs, but can't use an impact socket on them. I have to keep a socket in the truck because the stock lug wrench no longer is of use. It runs the jack so i'll keep it until I can get some bumpers and a high lift.

I don't run that size, but from lots of reading it is borderline as far as re-gearing. Some folks don't, some folks do. Some folks who do wish they had done it sooner, some folks who do don't think it was worth it. I think by the time you get to 35" the re-gear becomes an easier decision in favor.

If by recalibrate you mean the speedometer/odometer then for reference my 235/85/R16 (31.7") actually makes the speedometer perfectly accurate (they typically read a bit high with the stock size). So with a 33 you'd be about 5% off which is hardly the end of the world.

If you have the stock 265/70/16's you will be looking at the below in regards to your speed.

also another question, I am sure it has been talked about here, but too many post to look into. but how many of you have 16x8 rims with 235/85/16 tires? only concern is tire manufacturer all have a max rim width of 16x7, but most aftermarket rims are 16x8 so wondering if people had issues with getting tires on, balancing etc...

I've read that 33" is borderline with regearing. I am running 255/85 cepek extreme country. I don't feel a need to re-gear with those. I think it is important to mention that I have a 6 speed MT though. It seems like the manuals tolerate the 33's better than the autos. It is just like an oil discussion, personal preference and no right answer.

With 235/85R16's I would go with a 16 x 7 or 16 x 7.5 wheel max. You can physically put those tires on a 16 x 8 wheel, but you would be stretching the tire. Not good IMHO. Stick with the manufacturers recommended wheel size is a safer option.

    With 255/85R16 you can go with a 16 x 7 or 16 x 8 wheel max. I would not go over the 16 x 8 wheel though. My $.02
