.2 of a quart

I realize the array of possible ridiculous answers, but just finished first oil change with 6 quarts. Point two of a quart needed?

Use whatever amount the owners manual says, dont overthink it, if your really worried use the dipstick to make sure.

 

.2 is just about the size of the filter cup.

Yes, I agree it's kind of stupid.

I have done 3 changes so far, bought a spare bottle just for the .2 quart part of the equaion

 

Go by the dip stick, not the quantity called for. I would bet 6 will put you where you need to be. Typically the fill quantities assume more gets drained than what usually actually does.

 

I don't understand the shallow pan comment? 6qt of oil is a good amount for 10,000mi on a gasoline motor.

I buy 5qt jugs at Amazon / Walmart, so the extra 0.2qt is a non-issue.

My comment on the oil pan is that I like the vertical drain bolt for an easier catch of the first big gush.

 

Checked the dipstick and it looks full. We all know how the dipstick is though so, meh.

As far as shallow pan, I should have specified. I meant oil drain pan. I expected a mess but not that bad. Fumoto is on so next time will be better.

Following directions is not an issue. I just hate having a partially open jug of oil in the garage. I don't know why, I'm sure it is fine. I've had some bad experiences with partial brake fluid and shock oil containers but I know that is not the same. Wife's 4Runner specs 6.6 quarts of oil and I just use 6.5 and use the second .5 of a quart on the next oil change so I should really just relent. At some point, unless I can time/align oil changes, I feel there will be .4 of a quart here, .2 of a quart there, and so on collecting around the garage.

My 09 spec'd 5.5 but a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 was taking it to the 3/4 mark on the last couple of oil changes before I traded it in so I didn't add the .5.

 

The threaded portion of the Fumoto valve will leave 0.2 quarts in the pan...disaster avoided.

 

I honestly think you are right. There was a nice steady drip at the beginning of my oil change that slightly tapered off so I put on the valve. I swapped filters and cleaned up then went to open the Fumoto expecting there to be a stream of residual and there was ONE drop that came out. I was surprised enough that I crawled directly under the valve to make sure the ball was opening all the way.

 

Also, the 09 had a Fumoto which may have accounted for the variance and the wife's 4Runner got one put on with the last oil change.

 

Ah. My pan barely holds the oil also.

One caution on the fumoto valve is that it is pretty exposed without a serious skid plate.

 

Noted. I am looking at Mobtown's aluminum skids as I type this. I got the non nipple standard Fumoto but skids were already on my list so I moved them up the priority scale.

 

When I had my 2 oil changes at the dealership I asked the service advisor whom I have known 30+ years how much oil they put in and he said they put 6 quarts in. He pulled my dipstick and you could see the level in the bright sunlight just right below the full mark. Not even a toothpick width to the full mark. If they put the .2 in they would charge you for a full quart which I bet they do once you get the 2 free oil changes.

 

I just checked it again and from what I can tell with the sketchy dip-stick I am a hair under full.

 

.2 will stay in there even if Ya let it drain for a year;
That is my guess anyhow.

 

Step One: Drain Oil
Step two: remove filter
Step three: replace filter
Step four: Put the oil drain plug back in
Step five: put 6 quarts of oil in the engine via filler.
Step Six: Close the hood.
Step seven: Drive to the liquor store and get a 24 pack of PBR
Step eight: Go home, put on a good porno and watch some boobs bounce while you drink your frosty beer...

 

Just go by the level on the dipstick -- you will be fine.

Its not an airplane or space shuttle. Missing the .2 will not kill it any faster or slower.

 

I helped change the oil on a unlimited hydro turbine once. We didn't measure the oil going in. Just checked the dipstick was at the proper level.
