Got tired of the hard metal tailgate protector so I covered it with some medium soft rubber mat from McMaster Carr. Used 3M 90 spray glue, but ran out before fully coated, so a couple spots stick up a bit. I'll pick up some more tomorrow. So far, so good. The dogs will probably tear it up sooner or later. But it will help on the few occasions when I have to crawl into the bed.

I need to do this. My knees scream at me every time I crawl into the bed. Just have to find something that will be soft enough on the knees but hold up to sliding things across. Curious to see how that works out for you.

 

What I have would probably be too soft for your needs. Since I have a bedslide I wont be sliding shit across it, though my German Shorthaired Pointer will definitely put it to the test. She takes running leaps into the bed and was sliding across the tailgate cover. This ought to give her some traction. Hope it holds up. But this material comes in different levels of firmness so you might try that. Check them out online.

It’s a strange feeling. I’ve owned lots of different iterations of Toyota trucks and LandCruisers. This one seems to envoke more emotional attachment than most.

I blame my age and the onset of fatherhood.

I hate wearing knee pads so I carry a swim kick board that doubles for this use. You can now get really soft kneeling pads of closed cell foam.
