    Hey all,
I'd like to start reaping the benefit of synthetic in my 09 v6 access cab. I have 115k miles and I don't believe it's ever had synthetic in it. I know there's a real debate online about it but I wanted to get peoples opinion. Is it okay to go back and forth between synthetic and conventional on a motor that has only seen conventional? Do I risk gunking up seals or rings?

    Thanks!

To my knowledge you are good to go. Walmart has gallons of Mobile 1 for like $29 then grab a single bottle, new oem filter... Good to go

You don't think there's much benefit to synthetic?

Depends who you ask. SOme say yes, some say no.

Mobil 1 high mileage. 22 and change at Walmart and a $12 rebate from Mobil. $10 bucks for 5qts is a steal.

I’ve always heard not to switch back and forth but I don’t see what it could hurt. :notsure:

You think there is an advantage to using high mileage? I'm either gonna start using high mileage conventional or full synthetic. I have heard that if you start using synthetic later on, then you can unlodge all kind of gunk

Well it would likely be just fine and youll notice no real differences. Up to you. Doesnt the 4.0L call for 5w-30 Synthetic from factory anyway??

Syn IS better for temperature extremes, so if you tow, or offroad hard, or see low winter temps, it is generally better on the engine. Otherwise at this point it just costs a little more to buy. Instead of 3-4K mile interval, do 5-7K with Syn.

I didn't see any mention of synthetic in the 09 manual. I'll check again. I live in Pennsylvania so the cold temp performance is very attractive.

I wouldnt worry about the switch over from regular to synthetic, engine design is so advanced as to the point it doesnt make a difference.

With the cost of Mobil 1 full synthetic at $22 for 5 qts ($10 bucks with rebate, which they run twice a year), I would just switch and stay with that going forward. I've been using it day once since I purchased my truck.

There is a debate as to whether high mileage is just a money grab for a few additives that may or may not make a difference.

And please dont be that dumb ass that changes their oil every 3K when using synthentic. 5K at a min, there are guys on here that go to 7.5K and have dozens of blackstone reports saying they could go to 10K.

unless you are doing tests to go longer distance between oil changes, do it with dino every 5k

Piece of mind is worth it sometimes. It may make you more comfortable just sticking to the cheapest 5w30 plain old dino on the market. Can't go wrong that way either. To be honest, for everyday usage , synthetic is probably a waste of money for guys like us. If you heavy tow constantly, go off road constantly, do tons of city stop and go constantly, then maybe ( a big maybe too) synthetic may give a touch better protection and allow you to extend the change timeline.

Just pick one and stick to it. It shouldn't hurt anything but switching back and forth is just silly.
