Hi guys! After a few months of debating what to get, I’ve decided my best option was to pursue a new 2018 TRD Offroad 4x4.

I followed a similar tactic shared on the “So you want to buy a Tacoma?” thread and used dealer quotes to start a small price war.

I decided I wanted a 2018 TRD offroad 4x4 in quicksand with a tech package. I found that truck at a dealer for 38,8 (mind you that I am in San Diego California).

Through some negotiation I got them down to 36,5 with tech package, offroad package, predator steps, all weather floor mats and door sill, some door edge protector and the tow package. I know people have gotten better deals, but what do you all think? Is it worth negotiating more? Tacoma’s are in very high demand in my area so I’m not sure how much more room there is.

    Thanks!

National City has been very responsive, but they didn’t have the truck I was looking for nor did they offer to acquire one.

I was in the same boat last December. Talked to a few dealers throughout San Diego County, didn’t see much, and no one was willing to deal under $500, for the model I was after.

So what your quoted isn’t a bad price, considering you don’t have to drive far to buy.

I ended up going to Freeman Toyota, and bought the 17’ DCSB TRD OR 4x4 6MT, with Tow Pkg, nothing else. $32.2k , $35.2 OTD, tax, license, docs.

In San Diego, it seems you're lucky if you can get any discount on Tacomas. I couldn't get one penny off sticker when I got mine (though that was right when they were coming out).

Decent deal for that market, IMO.

Carlsbad and Escondido move the most units in San Diego. Also Likely to have the best selection, or will dealer trade for what you want with another dealer that wouldn’t deal.

So Carlsbad has nothing in stock and won’t return calls or respond to emails. Escondido offered to acquire one, but wouldn’t budge on the price. The one I found is in Orange County.

I'd look in Arizona and Nevada too since they're a short distance away. Everywhere in LA, OC, and SD are priced similar to each other.

Don’t go to those 2 dealers. They blow. Won’t budge on pricing.

OC Toyota was very willing to negotiate and never got pouty when I tried to talk them down... unlike some other dealers. Sounds like the consensus is that I’m getting a good price for my region.

Talk to Dave Salow, the Internet Sales Manager at Escondido Toyota. He's very personable and will do what he can to work with you vs the regular sales folks.

Does anyone know if there are dealer incentives for selling trucks before they ever hit the lot? The truck I found is supposed to arrive by Wednesday, and it sounds like they want me to be there as soon as it comes off the truck.

No. It's sales folks wanting to get their sale credit before someone else can slide in. Take your time and find the right sales person you're comfortable with. DO NOT RUSH IT. If the dealership you choose doesn't have it, they'll make a trade with a dealership that does, and if that's not available, they'll order it from the factory. Besides, they all come off the same boat/train, just tagged for a different dealership. If it's factory ordered, it rolls through the factory with your name and dealership info on it. Any customization you want done to the truck, i.e. packages, are done at the dock in ( as I'm told ), then sent to the dealership.

I'm telling you, Dave Salow at Escondido will do whatever he can and give you the best deal he has available. Tell him that Heidenreich sent you. :)

Did you try truecar.com? I used it when I bought my truck a few years ago and felt I got a really good deal. Bought it in Kearny Mesa on a weekday after work. It was the fastest and easiest car purchase I have ever had.

Ok good to know. The internet sales guy I delt with was very easy to work with but maybe I’ll reach out to Escondido again.

Yes so I tried TrueCar, but 99% of the results are not even close to what I’m looking for. Wrong color, wrong trim, 2wd, just plain silly. I saw that through Escondido my truecar price is 36,8 or so if they were to order one, which is cool but I have a better price already and don’t have to wait for it!
