I was okay with my rate until my homeowners' was going to renew for $200 more and the F150 was going to cause an $800 increase.

Where I grew up my town had none and none of the surrounding towns did either. Where I am now, probably 90% of the town does not, only the sections right next to North Adams, so ~3 miles from me. I actually originally thought it was closer to me, but I found out even the school is well and septic so I think it's basically just houses right at the border.

A 10HP will push that, even loaded up. A 20hp would push it faster, obviously. Maybe compromise and find a 15?

That's what I am thinking, 15 might be just right. I don't need to go that fast it will mostly be some cruising around. Now I need to find one that doesn't cost a lot, but isn't dead....I don't think I am going to have any luck with that though.

This time of year CL is full of outboards, really. And there's going to be more and more in there every week, as we get into warmer weather. I've got the 45hp that my boat came with in there currently, actually.

on the stern of the boat, does the transom still have a plate saying max horsepower? A 15hp would probably work for you, but you need to measure to make sure you get the right shaft length or you'll run into issues.

I take it your going to use it to fish out of it.
So for trolling a 10 would be fine, if your using it to zip around the lake then get a bigger motor.

We use it fish lake Champlain with 9.9 with 3 adults ,gear and cooler. Trolling all day with out a problem

The trick is finding one that runs/functions correctly that isn't $1000.
Even the dinky little 5 horse putt putt motors are crazy $$ now. I spent all summer looking around before I found a deal on a 60 horse unit to put on my boat.

The old Titans, aside from being gas hogs, had a great reputation. Like you said, rear end was a little weak but I know lots of people who towed with them frequently and never had an issue. The new 5.6L V8 I've heard is pretty awesome but doesn't like to drive by a gas station. The diesel, on paper, is perfect but there isn't enough reliable information out there to make me feel good about owning one. Or is there... I'm really torn with it, they are very comfortable and supposedly they tow very well.
20hp+ Go big or go home!
This is sound advice for a multitude of life situations.

I just spent $800 for the 6 horse Mercury that I'm going to use for a kicker on my boat. And that was cheap, but it's a 4 stroke. Can probably find a decent 15 horse 2 stroke from say the late 80's vintage for around $500-700.

Yeah, his gets pretty atrocious gas mileage. He averages about 14 with it. Says he can squeeze 16-17 out of it on the highway if he's really lucky.

In the fall, maybe. Closer to $700-900 for most of what pops up this time of year. By September there's usually deals everywhere; I picked up my 60hp complete with all of the controls & the power tilt system for $600. The guy had been trying to sell it all summer, started out at $1200. I kept watching the price tick down as the summer went on, and when he hit $800 I called him up and offered him $600 cash and he took it. Probably should have offered him $500 now that I think about it; he didn't even try to haggle me up at all...
