Yeah but that's a 60 remote with power trim. I'm talking about a 15 horse tiller. I see them all the time for $500. They may be antiques, but $500 easy. In fact, I know someone who may be interested in selling an '85 Evinrude, I'll ask her. She wants a 6 horse, 4 stroke like mine.

@Bridge4 ... what size transom is it? 20" I imagine? Most the small, deep vees that don't have a stepped transom are 20" longshaft motors.

There's not a lot of vintage stuff on there right now. I'm talking 70's and 80's motors with points ignitions. Easy score for $500 when they show up.

I have been looking for an aluminum (16ish foot) flat bottom fishing boat to use locally and was looking at side console vs tiller. Any big advantage to one or the other? I have a small 12 foot flat bottom now with a tiny 2hp tiller that has worked well but I imagine SC must be nicer to operate on a bigger boat. I plan to go 25HP as that is the max Quabbin will allow and I will fish there on occasion.

Sounds like the Tundras from that vintage, too. Not sure why Toyota and Nissan are still getting 3/4 ton truck MPG's out of half tons.

How far do you plan on boating with it? Tillers are fine for short trips, but they're a lot less comfortable for a longer boat ride, just because of the position you have to sit in to run the engine. Plus they have a tendency to have that nose ride right up into the air if you don't have somebody sitting up front to help hold it down. :notsure:

But, there's fewer moving parts so I suppose theoretically they're cheaper and easier to maintain, long-term?

What you mean, 'from that vintage'? The Titan and Tundra are still the pigs of the half ton MPG! The Titan supposedly got much better with the newly redesigned engine. They somehow got away without rating the XD but I'd bet that would be a depressing number. The XD is heavy, I can't imagine what that equates to at the pump.

Are you planning on trolling? If you are fishing the Q, I would assume you are going to do some trolling for coldwater species and personally I would never troll without a wheel boat. Tillers are great because there is nothing taking up space on deck, and they are simple. There's no controls or Teleflex steering to deal with. There is no electrical harness going from the battery, to the console, to the motor. But if you are going to drive the boat at 1.4mph for 10 hours at a time, you'll go insane with a tiller.

Also, a side console frees up some space at the stern for another person to fish. So while someone is in the stern setting lines or fighting a fish, you can be at the side console driving. Keep in mind, when you are trolling multiple lines, you need to keep driving forward even when you hook up. With a tiller, you are already occupying the stern as a driver. Can make it crowded, even in a 16'

Well aren't the new Titans rated for 21 on the highway? Still not spectacular, but it's a damn sight better than what the previous generation would do. The Tundras still hoover fuel, but supposedly the Titans are more efficient than they used to be.

    Haha, right!

That wouldn't work with the Quabbin. It's a freakin' process to get certified. They have inspectors all over your boat to get it certified. You have to get it washed down there, by them. Even the trailer needs to pass certification and all three parts, boat/motor and trailer get tagged for use on the Q.

    What happened at BWW?

so I could never get the techstream software to work so I am looking at buying cloneable tpms sensors. Sullivan wanted 80 per sensor. Townfair wants 46.99 per sensor. If anybody has a better option let me know. Otherwise I plan to buy them this saturday.

MPG became the primary reason I didn't buy a Tundra. A couple MPG isn't a big deal. 13/17 vs 19/24 was, you're talking 6-7 MPG there.

I mean you don't really need it. It shouldn't negate the bed to periodically check tire pressure.

It's why I ruled it out from the beginning, honestly. If you want 3/4 ton gas mileage, just buy a 3/4 ton truck. Then at least you'll have the extra utility to go along with the crappy mpg's.
