    Hey all,

So I'd to swap the WC Lathewerks knob from my 2016 Taco to the 2017. I can't seem to twist open the silver boot collar from the stock knob - unlike in the 2016 Taco in which the collar was perhaps too loose.

Right now I can twist on the boot collar and the knob itself moves along the thread of the shifter. Before I force it further, thought I'd ask in case the 2017 TRD Sport manual shifter has a different set up...

    Anyone?

I'll give it a shot, but that's an auto. The manual transmission shifter, at least on the 2016, had a different system. The boot collar had to be twisted counter-clockwise (I think) to release it from the bottom of the shift knob.

    Thanks though,

You're on the right track. Hold the shift knob, if it's moving counter-clockwise, and rotate the silver ring counter-clockwise. If I remember correctly, it only took about 1/4 turn to set it free.

I tried precisely that - thinking it was just a tight fit. Held the shift knob firmly in one hand and turned the silver ring counter-clockwise with the other. No dice. If I turned it any harder while holding the shift knob in place, it felt like the plastic ring was torquing.

I have a suspicion my 2017 Sport is a one-off or runt of that litter. A number of things seem odd about the fit and finish - the leather shift boot is fitted oddly, has way too much fabric at the front which balloons out when you're shifting (its an obvious error). Then that weird power sliding rear window - you can't lock it centrally like the door windows, and I always manage to open it accidentally with my knee when I reach into the back seat...

Sorry to rant, but there's been a couple of things about this truck - much unlike the 2016 which was a dream.

As for the shift boot collar, I have a feeling either the locking mechanism between knob and boot is different, or mine is defective - I just can't see myself twisting harder without breaking something!

If I were more inclined and manually skilled, I'd pull up the whole boot and console and take a look-see under there - somethin ain't right...
