If you want to get rid of the 4-5-6 dick dance, just shell out for the OVTune. I can't go back to that stock POS anymore.

I can hold 6th gear and get 25mpg at 65-70mph now. Couldn't before.

    Totally different truck.

Should mention I went back to stock tires cause I didn't want to shell out for the 4.88's.

Either way you gotta spend some dough to fix Toyota's fuckups with this automatic transmission.

    For the OP

Yes, the Tacoma could use more low and mid-range torque.

You could try S-mode and at least keep the transmission in 3rd gear for as long as you want until shifting it up to 4th gear.

Also works great for limiting the transmission to 5th gear to prevent hunting at highway speeds.

With the manumatic transmission in the Tacoma, you can use S-mode, + and -, and control the transmission, RPM and speed that you want.

No ECT button needed if you do this.

Try it out. Row it up and down like a manual transmission sometimes if you like, but of course without the clutch.

Not all automatic transmissions can do that.

I’ve had several manual transmission vehicles and liked them all. But you have to row them all the time.

With the Tacoma automatic you can eat your burger and fries while driving if you want, and you can also pick the gears at any time if you like.

My city MPGs are also low.E62E391E-BCFC-4D0C-AB9C-34406B9C7E64.jpg

I average roughly 17mpg with my 17 off road m/t on a really lack luster day shifting at at 2500 rpm. Im still not happy with it. It doesn't matter what qualitly fuel I use either. Im sitting at 5000 to 5500 msl. It seems people at lower elevations have more power stock than people at altitudes. It has gotten to the point I am debating on selling my truck and getting another full size.

    To the OP:

My truck completely changed after 6K, it was a noticeable difference. I keep my stock tires at about 39-40 psi and average 19 MPG and this is 70% city, 30% highway driving. It is all about throttle control, if you don't have to use your brakes you get better MPG.

+1 to the ECT and +1 to the S mode + and - mode...

and if you really can't stand it and feel the need for speed get the OV Tune or Shift Sense Pro if the shifting is your only complaint.

I go speed limit everywhere and don't accelerate like everyone else, if I kept up with traffic and drove like most people drive I would average 16 MPG.

Mines seems to drive better then it did new I'm at 4600 miles now. Seems like less gear hunting and lurching around overall. I get about 17-20 on the hwy most days keeping it right around 70. I have sliders, IFS skid, bed rack with RTT, Prinsu rack, ARB awning, and 265/70/17s with no lift.

    Like many have said..

It's new (not broken in, it'll get better with more miles on it)

The transmission learns, and it's still learning

The nut behind the steering wheel can make the fuel economy extraordinarily shitty, or good

I have just under 9k on my SR5. I changed the oil at 5k myself. I'm getting about 18.5MPG with a good mix of city/highway driving. I can get to 21MPG if I drove only highway pretty easily.

This is why i have always driven manual transmission. I can not stand a computer shifting for me.

You all bought a truck-if you wanted gas mileage buy a Corolla. This is my 4th Toyota truck, Gen 1, 2 Gen 2s and 1 Gen 3. Toyota makes a great truck, I also own a 2015 Toyota Sequoia, want to talk about gpm, 15 all day long on the flats. Still love both of them!! :oldglory:

I mean I get it to some degree but I dont really... 1-2 MPG really shouldnt matter and honestly if someone is so hung up on it and it bothers them that much or cant afford it maybe they should have gotten something else to begin with. Just drive it and enjoy it if you cant afford the gas or are loosing sleep over a few mpgs get something else.

Im tired of this argument. A gas v6 shouldn't be getting the milage of a fullsize v8 Its bullshit. We dont buy trucks for the milage but it is 100% bullshit they don't produce the numbers claimed. I went from a 10mpg ram 2500 cummings to this and im not impressed what so ever. Fuels standards can be far better than they really are.

For what its worth my Tacoma gets better MPG then my Tundra did. I dont think either one however got the HWY numbers they claimed.

That totally makes sense. Air is less dense at altitude and thus lower O2 available. That's why turbos really help if you live in Denver. Check this out.
