Ride a bike CHALLENGE!

Last year i wanted know know how much i take my truck for granted so i set out to do the impossible. Put my keys away for a solid week and only ride a bike/skateboard/anything that takes work. The only exception was if i absolutely had to drive out of town for a job or emergency.
It made me appreciate my truck more than i would ever know, got me more in shape, and was a pretty fun challenge.

So now i bring it here. Can you do it? Put the keys down for a solid week, only ride a bike/skateboard/run/walk everywhere that is physically possible.
It may be hard for people with jobs pretty far away so that is an exception.

Lets start this sat 5-15-2010 and end the 22nd. Again if you HAVE to drive then go ahead. I have to drive an hour away every sat. Its more for the around town stuff.

Who is in?

 

I live out of town by 24 miles, otherwise i would give it a shot.

 

haha no prob. 48 miles round trip would be tough.

 

i did this a week ago when i got my coilovers rebuilt had no front shocks for a week haha

 

Back before I had kids and in college, I did something similiar, except it was for more than a week. I would say close to a year. I biked to school about 10 miles each way and work about 5 miles each way. It was very rewarding. Now, I have to pick up my 5 year old and 3 year old from school and daycare, might be kind of difficult giving them piggy-back rides for about 15 miles each way.

 

I did it for a few months in VB, amazing how much you save on gas $$

 

I used to bike EVERYWHERE when I was in High School without a license. One summer I even set a goal to bike 500 miles before school started. I rode every single day, even from city to city on my 1 speed BMX bike, keeping track of miles on google maps and an excel spreadsheet.

At the end of the 3 months I had only ridden 250 miles. That's like only 1 tank of gas! And I thought I had biked my ass off.

I also challenge you guys to do this, and set a mileage goal and see if you can reach it.

Oh yeah, and by the end of that summer on my 1 speed, my legs were freaking ripped.

 

I did something similar with riding my motorcycle. I took a bet that I couldn't ride it for a year. Now if I had to use my truck I did, but I commuted to work for a year on the bike. I have a photo somewhere in front of a bank sign which shows the temp at -1F. I have a BMW R1200 GS ADV, and have since added heated seats. I try to ride it as often as I can, but not as hard core as I use to be.

I use to ride my bike all the time. One day I decided to ride my badge number 57 miles. I started against the wind so I would have it at my back on the return leg. No luck. Just as I was going to turn south to take advantage of it, the wind shifted and a storm rolled in. Up to 30 mph winds into my face for the last 2 hours (20 miles)! At one point I had to stop because I couldn't keep enough forward momentum to keep the bike going! It wound up taking me 5 hours to get home. Lesson learned...check the weather online before setting out!

I might try the bicycle thing, but won't be able to start this weekend.

id be in but i left my bike at my brothers in edmonton when i moved back. cant wait to start riding again

 

im going to see if i can borrow a road bike from my friend, right now all i have is my mtn bike

 

How far is your ride to work ? I think mine is 17 miles one way. I will drive it home tonight and let you know if I'm in or not. I usually take I-10, to do this challange I will have to ride the surface streets. After 8 hours in full gear is rough. I'll let you know.

 

even if you have to drive to and from work, but around town and as far as you can ride.

 

I just got home and that's a 15 mile ride one way. I will do all the little runs on my road bike and do at least one ride too and from work.

I like to ride to work its 36miles round trip Im sure a road bike would make it better but its not that bad.

 

I do it for training (ride Road bike to work) 74 miles round trip a couple days a week. not because I believe in global warming, but to keep fit. That must be stated.

I'm 49 and work 30 miles from home. It's not the age or distance thing, more like where to shower at work and having to leave at 3 a.m. to get there before traffic goes nuts. I did do this over the wknd tho...parked the truck on Friday afternoon and it went nowhere until Monday morning....condensed version, lol.

 

yea, working out the logistics sucks! thankfully my buddys office is right down the street with a SHOWER! I have t owear a shirt and tie for work, so I bring that the day before.
