OP, I wouldn't have any issue with what you've been hauling to this point. I have been carrying around that kind of weight for years. I even tow fairly often. If the trailer is heavy, I'm not going far. If the trailer you're planning to add will be towed regularly, you have the wrong truck.

How so? When you overload an axle the bearings wear more quickly as do the leaf springs, brakes, shocks, drive line, pretty much everything that gets beefier in a truck with more payload. Much as I like my truck I'm not interested in exceeding its engineering limitations out of wishful thinking. It seems pretty obvious that the choices are to design a camping set up within the vehicles capabilities or choose a vehicle that has the capability to handle the design you'd rather have. Anything else will lead to failure.

A double cab long bed Tacoma has a pay load capacity of 1100lbs to include passengers and any weight that is in the entire vehicle, not just whats in the bed.

While you can beef up the suspension on a truck to handle better payload... that is for short durations of time IE a single load. No matter what you do to the suspension it will not allow you to permenantly carry heavy loads. You are still placing incredible strain on the engine and trans. Air bags don’t resolve that issue.

What you currently do is illegal and highly irresponsible. Your registration does not allow you to carry that much payload wise, and you are setting yourself up for liability if you were deemed in any way at fault for an accident.

I would not recommend compounding stupidity by adding more weight.

Sell the Tacoma before the engine and trans are trashed and get a full size.

What amazes me is that camper companies happily sell units that exceed the rating of the truck. Seems like the legal liability there would be huge. It not only overloads the truck, but adds the weight in the most unsafe position possible. That being said, there are millions of Tacomas running around overloaded. It is almost impossible to use the truck for anything meaningful without doing that. Just adding decent bumpers and a shell gets you close. The Tacoma is a favorite of expo truck builders, and I'll bet most of them are overweight. You don't see broken Tacomas along the roadway. My guess is that Toyota is pretty conservative in their ratings. I think I would feel OK with 1,500 pounds, all inclusive. My truck runs about 250 pounds under the Toyota limit with me and a passenger. Not much left to work with....

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
I think you bought the wrong truck. Tacomas are great, but this is Superduty territory.

Man I hate to sound like a nanny-stater but I have to agree with the above post. You're already overloaded and talking about making it worse. These trucks aren't rated for the weight and they definitely do not have the brakes for it- there are plenty of posts on here from folks trying to figure ways to upgrade the stock brakes even without loads. The guy carrying huge amounts of water, in tanks that apparently don't have baffles no less, is just completely irresponsible. Personally I don't care if you want to overload your truck and you kill or maim yourself, that's your business, but when you're putting everyone else on the road at risk then you're being selfish and irresponsible in regards to everyone else on the road. There are plenty of videos on youtube, stories on the news, etc. of wrecks involving overloaded vehicles if you need some inspiration to buy a bigger truck. Jeez, I sound like I'm from California or something. :puke:

get the right truck for the job

I bought a F350 so I would not have to worry about over loading for a camping trip

I agree 100% with you. The problem is he may take someone or several people out besides himself when the disaster happens. I don’t like to flat out disagree with people on this forum but the people who say he is just fine with his grossly overloaded rig or the ones who say add a tranny cooler or some other mod are just plain wrong. The truck is grossly overloaded, ain’t nothing going to make driving it safe even for short distances. So as far as adding a trailer It is a moot point. He already has an unsafe rig and adding any trailer to the equation will just make it more unsafe.

beefing up the suspension adding coolers, airbags, ect doesn't change the payload. its rated for what its rated for a reason. these aren't work horses.
